Got a buddy in TX who is stuck in the boonies with a 2002 7.3 f250. Cranks great, but no other sign of life.
I'm trying to help him out remotely, but I don't know these engines.. Do you guys hear a fuel pump run up pressure when you cycle the key? I know the injectors run off oil pressure, so i told him to check the level, and it's full.
Yes, he should hear the fuel pump for about 20 seconds with key on.
Known issues are
Fuel bowl heater shorting out causing blown fuse (shared wit PCM). Does he get a wait to start light? Cure is to disconnect the bowl heater and change the fuse.
Fuel level below 1/4 tank can cause lack of fuel if the pickup foot in tank breaks off.
Good for you on asking oil level. That was going to be my first suggestion.

I had the IDM relay fail intermittently on mine. A good test is find the IDM relay in the under hood fuse box, and swap it with the neighbor next to it...the blower motor relay.
What is the WTS light?
And, yes, it's a challenge to help him. I told him to check all his fuses. That should keep him busy for awhile! I also want him to listen for the fuel pump at key on.
Thanks for all the good suggestions and questions. He is going to utilize his 200 mile free AAA tow and have the truck towed to Bastrop. There is a shop there (Lopez) that is going to work on it. He is too busy with the foundation concrete pour for his off-grid palace out there.
I cringe at the thought of having a random shop work on it.
one of the many reasons my truck has enough tools for most any job short at an engine rebuild etc on board. Of course FTE is one of the special tools to keep her on track!!
Very unsatisfying end to this one. He had it towed to town, and it started and ran fine for the shop. No codes either. He had some kind of aftermarket air filter setup that the shop is going to remove and replace with the factory set up that was rattling around in the bed. Oh well, we will have to see how it goes going forward.
