Anyone had any experience with the oil leak from the vacuum pump on the front of the engine ?
I had to make a trip to Denver on Wed & when I got home notice oil on the front tie rod, drag link, etc. when I crawled under thought I had the dreaded upper oil pan leak. After further investigation the oil was coming from further up. Looking online I see that some folks have had luck tightening the bolts on the vac pump, that that was known problem from Ford with the bolts being loose. So I'm thinking I'll have a look & took the intake tube off & lucky me I have a 2 alt setup & there is an alt right there in the way, too much stuff for me to remove to tighten 4 8mm bolts. Anyway I call my son at the local Ford dealer to give me a price for a new gasket replace & he comes up with $380. He said the diesel mech told him I should just buy a new vac pump for $105 instead of just the gasket.
So he calls me back a little later & says the mech said if I buy the new pump he would install it for $100 cash. So he is going to do the job Mon afternoon & I will add a little to the $100 & try to make friends with that mech lol
Curious if anyone here has had this leak

So I'm assuming it's this behind the idler pulley bracket on my truck on top here...
The vacuum hose goes to it on the right...
Most here have just re-tightened the mounting bolts, from what I've seen here...
And thanks because I've always wondered where the second alternator would be so from what you're describing, it's right there under the intake tube, and which I don't have one there... so single it is...
Yes Dave that's exactly what I'm talking about, right behind the bracket that has the idler pulley & fan. Didn't look like too bad a job until I saw the alt on mine just to the left of the idler pulley in your pick. So I figure it's worth the $100 to $150 I'll give the fella to fight with all that ***** .
I had this leak repaired under warranty on my 2016. At least one of the bolts was loose, and I would’ve just tried tightening it up if it had been out of warranty. In your situation, I would definitely take advantage of the $100 install of the new pump by the Ford tech.

Yep... I'm with you there. But at least I know where my vacuum pump is now... thanks.
MY 2015 DRW F350 had that leak. Was told that the Vacuum Pump was bad as well. Changed in Dec 22. Started leaking around last Aug. About a QT every 3000 miles. Better than some of my older Vehicles. Now my driveway is clean again.
Ford diesel tech crawled over & under truck yesterday & told me I'll put the vac pump on but that wont cure your leak, it's coming from upper oil pan...DAMNIT
He said it wasn't too bad & to just run it so I pressed him for a price to fix it & he said he would do it on a weekend for $500-$600
Guess I'll run it awhile & see how bad it aggravates me

That's to pull the trans off to get the upper pan OFF and re-seal??

Yes, the only "bad" thing he said about the job was he would want the truck all weekend. Something like a 10 hr. job by the book. He seemed like a real good fella & my son says they don't see folks that he repairs coming back with complaints.

Wow...nice. I'd tip that dude 500 bucks. That's a nice asset to have...

That's exactly what I was thinking when he said he would do the vac pump for $100, I brought $150 with me to give him. I told my son I wanted that dude for a friend
Anyone remove one of these vacuum pumps and observe an oil gallery screen on the facing surface? The reason I ask is that my sons Chevy Spark had a similar pump and there was a very small oil gallery screen that clogged and took out his camshaft. Once the screen clogged up the pump seized and broke the driving tabs off the camshaft. I replaced the camshaft and pump and it has been working for two years, but recently I got a wild hair and took the new pump off and its screen was about half clogged closed. Kind of reminds me of a clogged artery and I guess I will remove his pump periodically to clean the screen. I am curious what the front of our 6.7 pumps look like and if there is a small oil gallery screen slowly but sure getting clogged up with gunk. I am not even sure what drives the pump on a 6.7 and what a seized pump could possibly take out with it. Thanks for indulging me.

From the videos I watched there are no screens associated with the vac pump on the 6.7.
There are 2 "tabs" that engage into the drive gear on the engine, There is a video on youtube where a guy takes a pump apart to show the interals.
I did a little more digging and found the oil gallery on these pumps. Around the perimeter of the housing there are four attaching bolts and a fifth hole which has a green gasket, Inside is a very fine mesh screen, this is the oil input into the housing to lube the moving shaft and parts. The two half moon plates under the shaft are overpressure / returns. They have a rubber piece that seals against the mating surface. If it wasn't so buried I'd take mine off to inspect the level of obstruction in that small screen, i would believe that this will lead to failure in the long run. I am glad to see the heavy duty driving gear that it mates to. Notice the small green area with the screen just begging to clog up. Change that oil regular.
