This vehicle is a 2004 (build date 10-20-2003) F250 crew cab LWB with the 6.0 power stroke diesel.
I took possession of this vehicle on 10-27-2003, 1 week after build date.
After driving the truck for 2 weeks, I returned the truck to the dealership for a constant surging under accelleration issue.
The truck has now been in the dealerships repair center for 1 full week. May end up there for another week?
The dealer has informed me that they have exhausted all of the tech hot line advice on repairing this issue. They have replaced numerous components and made sure that the computer indeed has the most recent updates and the problem is still there.
They are now in the process of compairing part for part with a normal running truck from their lot.
It sounds like a snipe hunt.
I should also add that i ordered this truck and paid cash for it.
My feelings right know are that they should just replace the truck with another.
You would think that they would take care of this in a faster time frame.
I'm posting this just to let others know that problems do exist this this engine.
I am having the exact same problem. I have an '04 F350 ext. cab. I received it on Nov. 4 2003. This morning it started doing the exact same thing that you described. Between 2000 and 3000 RPM's it surges. It seems to do it more with cold weather. I brought it to the dealer and the checked all the diagnostics on it and said everything was normal. Yeah Right. I also noticed that I only got 12 MPG on the first tank. The truck only has 450 miles on it. I also noticed that when you accelerate with medium pressure it increases RPM's in steps. Very Weird. Our trucks are to close to being manufactured on the same day for this to be a coincidence. I will let you know what happens. I hope it doesn't take as long. If anyone can help us please respond.
Hey Truck U. Could you please let me know what has happened with your truck. I just dropped mine off at the dealership and I could use a little guidance with what they did with yours.
I'd like to tell everyone that before i dropped the truck off, I looked through this forum for quite a few days and found only two references made to the problem i was having.
One possible problem was something called an exhaust pressure switch and the other was a EVT controller.
When i dropped the truck off I mentioned what i found out regarding this condition.
Well surprise, after a whole week they found out the EVT conroller was defective.
Needless to say i was pissed when i found that out. I told them that could be one of the problems. (Thanks to others that posted)
I went and spoke with the customer relations specialist at the dealership and informed him how things went down.
He was very apologetic about the whole thing and went as far as offering to see about getting an extended warranty at a reduced fee.
When I hear some solid numbers i'll let you know.
On the brite side, The truck is running great and my mpg is improving, From 11 around town to 14.5 on the first tank since its been back.
Thanks to everyone for posting info for all of us to share.
Just got a call from the dealership. They said it was the EPS , it senses exhaust back pressure. They have one on order and I should have the truck back tomorow. We'll see if that is the whole problem. I Hope.
Hey Truck U.
I got my truck back after they replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor. It is still doing it only a litlle less now. Can you give me any technical info on the EVT Controller, so that I can bring it to the dealer and show him. They don't take me seriously.
I have a 2003 F-250 6.0. Do not know when it was manufactured. I took my truck in for the Irractic Idle problem. They reprogrammed cpu and replaced O2 sensor. I got it back and thought I noticed less power and worse gas mileage. Mentioned it to the Service Manager and he said I was probable wrong and the reprogram had no adverse effects. I have been reading all the stuff posted and and do not know what I should do. I do not want to be stuck with a poorely running, problem child for a truck. Their is still a little bit of idle problem but nothing like what it was before. Can anyone give me some advice. Also, where do I find the Water fuel seperator and do I need to change fuel filter at the same time. My service dept says I do...my old diesal I did not have to change fuel filter at same time.
next update due mid 2nd quarter 2004, should resolve these issues and hopefully not create more.... water seperator is on frame near drivers door, be careful as allen head drain plug is apt to strip=($230.00 housing assy) filter right there with it...
