electronic shifting
I cant find any thing in my manuals on the electronic shifting console, the electronic control module, or the shift motor. I have gone through your archives and cant seem to find the answers.
The problem: after setting for a couple of months, the touch drive control doenst activate the shift motor, and the indicator lights on the console pad dont light up. and there is no sound from the shift motor.
My actions thus far: I have removed the touch pad and checked conections , i have removed the shift motor, and using an out side power source touched the yellow and orange terminals, th emotor spins for a second and stops, If i reverse the conections + - the motor spins again a few seconds and stops. Should it continue to spin ????
I dont know where to find the electronic control module cant find it behind the dash, is there a second location???? Als i have called to get a price on the electronic control module, there are two ??
One at the touch pad or shifting console and one at a remote location ??
the fuse panel doesnt contain a fuse for the electric shifting or i cant find one, is there another location where i might find it??.
can any one shine a light on such a simple thing that has me going nuts, there are 8 wires at the connector for the shift motor, two orange and two yellow jus tto confuse the old school thinker here where a manual shifter lever was the norm. This electronic system has me a little lost.
Your help is greatly appreciated
D
cheers, Boss429
but , I have found the control module busted of the added tabs??? to secure it in place, ?????
It was beside the speaker on the dash.
Is there any way to test this module or is it better to replace it????
It seems like a simple electrical system, Does any one knows the colour of the wire feeding power to the module, ????
thanks for your input.

So i continue :
Found the power wire White /red , there is power being feed to the electronic control module, with the engine running but none of the wires leaving the control are live. When the grey wire or the brown/grey wire i get indicator lights on the touch pad. which indicates to me that these lights are activated by a switch at the tranfer case.??????
I would say that the module is shot.
Does this hypothesis seem correct???????
thanks
i took everything apart and found just a 5volt power source on the top and under the truck.
i took a hammer to the motor underneath on the back of the transfer case and heard the motor move. then i played with the switch overhead and the light started working, and i heard the transfer case engage.
i try to use it once a day to keep it going, i hear relays clicking under the dash behind the radio, and if i was betting id say they are the problem. i hear one for 4hi and again for 4low.
i would start there. btw i have the complete service manual for this truck that came with it when i bought it.
I have replaced the eletronic control or relay under the cover on the dash, i have replaced the shift motor on the transfer, still i get nothing when the touch pad is pressed.
I have power getting to the pad, test light shows power here ,and all conections are either power or ground. if my guess is right some how the power gets reversed to switch from 4 hi to 4 low. the motor turns one way for hi and the opposite for low.???????
pressing the buttons doesnt seem to make a differnce on the testing of the terminals,
I tried crossing terminals on the pad to see if the switches were defective , still no activation or any sound from the shift motor.
There is nothing left to test or replace. i need your help here, all that is left is a wire problem, iam guessing ground wire?????? since i have power getting to touch pad and electroic control, the motor how ever has none.
The scematic i have is flat doesnt show wire location and travel. so i need to know where the two wires that feed the shift motor travel. from motor to control.
or if any of you have input that may help. I have long been a ford guy and now iam being attacked by " its a a ford live with it"
help me save the good ford name. thanks
If so the problem lies in the wiring between the module and the shift motor. Assuming the shift motor you replaced is a good one.
If there is no clicking from the shift module you mite want to check the blue wire that runs from the rear antilock module to the 4X4 shift console. Or the limits in the shift motor that tells the module what position it is in.
Good Luck.
the motor was bench tested 12 volts and the gear turns complete ther is a bit of hesitation between the 4 hi and 4 low
was told there is a clutch system inside the shift motor assembly ????? that allows the 4 hi to 4 low when connected this is how the shifting from 2 hi to 4 hi is controlled and then when 4 low is keyed, the clutch allows the motor to continue on to 4 low..
Once the motor is installed and power is feed to the terminals it sounds like it is only turning to 4 hi,
with every thing reconnected I do not get any clicking from the relays inside the control module.
Tried to order the control pad from Ford, they dont make it any more. and the wreckers around here dont have any left.
If i were to remove the cover on the control module and move the relays manually do you think this would let me know if the cause is between the pad and the control module?????
If it is the control pad, is it possible to cut the four wires that feed the relays and wire in 2, 2 way toggle switches to replace the the two switches on the pad??????
Iam leaning a bit towards replacing electric with manual, do you know if this can be done???? and ho wmuch work is involved???
I use this truck for plowing and to say the least there is a bit of stress occuring with this rather stupid shifting system, do you know if this was designed for those who were to lazy to shift a manual shifter????? lol
Thanks again for your help.
