I have a 1995 f-150. 6 cylinder standard transmission. I've been having trouble for a few months now. One day it won't start, let it sit a day or two and it starts and runs good. Then all of the sudden it won't start again. It has started acting like it wants to die as I'm driving it, but just once in awhile. It sat a lot before I bought it cause it was a company truck and only used maybe a few times a month. So today as I was going to work it just died and wouldn't restart. I was thinking either fuel pump relay, or just fuel pump issues. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments to help me out?? Anything would be appreciated.
When you turn the key on you should be able to hear the fuel pump prime.
If it cranks but won’t start and you can’t hear the pump prime it could be the relay.
If it won’t crank at all I’d check the battery connections and make sure they’re clean.
The negative cable should go down and ground on the side of the block. I’ve had trouble with that connection getting corroded and causing starting issues.
Yes, it cranks. I was driving it to work this morning when it just died. It's had trouble starting a couple of times, but when it does it sometimes it'll sputter and then start. But today it started just fine and made it exactly 1 mile and just died and wouldn't start again. When it does it if it sits awhile or even a day or two then it would start without problems.
Fuel pump relay would be a cheap and easy thing to check first
Does the truck have dual fuel tanks?
Im not sure if all trucks from this era had the fuel pump in the tank or not. Every one I’ve worked on did but I’ve never worked on a 6 cylinder.
If the pump is in the tank you should be able to hear it prime when you turn the key on. It’s kind of a high pitched whine that only lasts a second. You should be able to hear it from the cab with the door open.
Yes it has dual tanks, and I don't hear real well. But it started, then as I was driving it, it just died. Had it towed home. It 7:30 pm here and I just went out to change the relay and it started right up and I pulled it off the street and into my parking spot. I'm just lost. I thought maybe fuel filter. But I don't know what to think.
It's not a fuel filter issue. Clogged Fuel filter cause bucking/sputtering issues at high power settings and at high rpms, but they'll start and idle just fine.
You can be scientific about this and test components in your truck until you find the culprit, or you can start throwing parts at it and hope it fixes it.
Have you checked for codes?
Here's an easy tutorial on how to do it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...aper-clip.html . This will tell you if the computer sees a problem. It free and only take a paperclip and 15 minutes.
Most of these random stalling issues are caused by the fuel system (aka fuel pump or fuel pump relay), broken ignition switches, broken ignition coil connectors, or bad Ignition control modules (ICM).
