R152a conversion

I'm very interested in trying R152a (computer duster) as an alternative to R134 on my 87 F150 but I can't seem to find much info on what orifice tube to use. Is anyone here using it and which tube did you use?

Pressure curves are like R12, so you would want a blue FOT. I only use 152A with leaky systems to get by quick or find a leak when I do not want to drag my nitrogen tank out. Typically need 52-54% of the R12 charge, have to watch temp split and pressures.

IMO with the ability to buy drop in parallel flow condensers for these trucks, wasting time with alternative refrigerants is silly. Those are the key for a good R12 to 134A conversion...well plus a good fan and clean evap. Once clean and good condenser installed, gas up 36-38oz of 134A and get on with life.

Doesn't that more money than R134a anyway?
Why?
Fix the leaking system and use 134a

Cheaper actually. You can get a four pack of duster cans at Walmart for around $22. Half the price of 134. I've read a lot of people claim it cools better and runs lower head pressure than 134 so that's why I was interested in trying it.

Lower head pressure should cool less, not more
System designed for 175 to 250 nominal and 450 max
Is it flamable?
I wouldn't use it regardless of price
If you do use it, and need the system repaired, need recycling equipment
The equipment worth thousands will be contaminated and useless
Bad move IMO

Cooling better is relative. Most do not convert properly (think 'AC Pro' cans) and complain of poor vent temps. Without equipment, you are wasting time regardless of the situation.

Even a small tube condenser cools far better than the earlier big tube unit. Run an 89+ line set and compressor, early are lame. Red FOT for 134. 36-38oz 134A and get down road. Either way, it will cycle between 38-42F on suction side due to system design.

Like I said, I have used it before. Works fine when you know what you are doing for a halfassed quick job. Last time I ran it as I was heading into a rainy, five hour trip with leaking R12 system. R12 was gone and still had the '12 TXV. Got me what I needed to accomplish.

To each his own
There are systems out there full of propane
It works too, but can blow up
Stock R12 or convert to134a is correct, anything else is real bad
How is that stuff on the enviro scale
Does the EPA want to talk to you about a 10 grand fine yet?

It is sold as computer duster retail...so venting is fine apparently per the EPA I would imagine. There is a great SAE document out there worth a read on this refrigerant. Plenty of alt gasses are available retail such as R12a and Freeze 12, they are mostly 134A and LP.

A user should not take to a shop to use as obviously will contaminate the recovery and charging machine. If one knows what they are doing, fine. Most do not.

I hold 608 and 609 licenses, all my vehicles are 12 or 134 unless major pinch as stated above.

It is a hydrocarbon based refrigerant so yes, its flammable. So is the new industry standard R1234yf. The slight risk of fire does not concern me. I am a technician by trade so I'm the only one who will be working on it.
