Hard to start

I have a 92 F 250 with a 5.8 motor. Truck has low miles and has been very reliable until yesterday

at a dog park and tried to turn it over and almost caught but didn’t. Spent about the next 16 minutes to start it with no real luck

the truck will turn over fine, so cross off starter or battery. Both are doing fine. It will try to start but won’t kick over and the starter will just constantly turn over with out catching.

This is the first time for this to happen.

I don’t think it’s a fuel issue since I’ve had no issue with either tank. But the front tank was empty and the rear was half empty so I filled them both up
and switched it the front tank. Nothing, as if no fuel was getting to the motor. So I switched it back to the rear tank started fine and I went back home.

any thoughts ?

Check for spark. Also try spraying a little starting fluid in the intake then crank it over. If it fires then you know it is a fuel issue. If no spark and the starting fluid (if you tried it) do not work then you know to chase the ignition.

Edit
I missed where the engine fires up on the rear tank. Now this becomes a fuel delivery issue with the front tank. Rent or buy a fuel pressure tester. And a good idea to measure the fuel level sender output in the rear tank.

You must have edited this post or spark would not have been your problem if it started on the rear tank. Can only assume your front pump is kaput. Unless, you had an intermittent spark issue which would not be the problem now if it starts on either pump.

The first problem of no start / or hard start was at the dog park a few days back. The front tank has never been a issue and I went through the fuel , switched to the rear tank and than a few days ago still on the rear tank was when I noticed the hard start. Took me about 15 minutes to get it going with several pauses between starts.

it seemed to want to catch better when I waited for a few minutesin between starts versus trying to start it every few seconds . Turn it over nothing, wait a few seconds and repeat. That didn’t work well.

so I did get it started and than today it started right up from a cold start went to the gym and about 45 minutes later couldn’t get it started. Same scenario as when I first experienced the problem when at the dog park a few days earlier.

I knew the front tank was almost out of fuel ( been running in the rear tank) so decided to fill both tanks to the top.

Having never had a issue with the front tank, trying to start it on the front didn’t work rear well at the gas station, so out of curiosity switched to the rear tank started fine. With it running switched back to the front and no fuel.

coincidence or ? Not sure

Have you replaced any electrical part lately? You should run diagnostics codes

Update

Truck is at a shop that I trust. When I was having issues with the rear tank intermittently cutting off they figured it out. So on with the current issues is hard start

they replaced the coil the ignition module and they’re gonna do a full tuneup which includes spark plugs wires new distributor cap etc. and the truck have a PCV valve. Also I’m gonna put a new fuel filter in and see how that affects everything. The shop found some wires that they weren’t comfortable with so they redid them and we will see what happens

I have never had a issue with the front tank, only the rear. When having issues with the rear tank and several shops later several shops, the shop it’s currently at figured it out. The front always worked. I think it’s more coincident than related.

the shop was getting no signal from the coil so that was replaced and also replaced the ignition

No I haven’t. The shop where it’s at did and it’s not throwing any codes

Well, with all the new parts, which I would have done anyway, the truck runs real smooth.

Only issue is after several Starts and re starts, bam it hits again, engine cranks fine but won’t start like a fuel starvation

Mechanic I think did some research and thinks that there are baffles in the tank or something like that I may have misunderstood him but he says the rear tank is pumping fuel but it’s disrupted with air and he thinks it’s got something to do with the front tank as well which is no longer pumping fuel or something like that. They called it a day and will look at the front tank on Monday which should be enjoyable because it’s full of fuel being won’t be easy to drop

So when this hard start issue happens when using the rear tank has anyone actually measured the fuel pressure?

Yes, a faulty FRONT tank check valve or shuttle valve can cause low fuel rail pressure when using the REAR tank. It's known as cross-flow and is a very common problem on these trucks.
