Out of curiosity is what I'm experiencing a sign of a cable that has too much slack in it?
I have had the cable pop off the carb a couple times (old grease on a cold days overpowered the return spring). Shifts from first to second are so soft, it feels like it is skipping second altogether. Over 45/50 it is almost like third and fourth are both pulling at the same time.
The TV cable regulates pressure. Loose cable= lower pressure and causes clutches to slip which causes heat which causes more slip, more wear. A downward spiral until the vehicle won't move. If the rumble is indeed coming from the transmission I'd suspect something other than clutch/steel wear. The pressure also dictates shift timing which you do not complain about.
AS mentioned, since everything seems to work okay it would be hard to guess what the problem could be. Something like center support retaining ring broken comes to mind.
A simple check for TV cable: Move the throttle linkage at the carb and note that the TV cable has no slack. Goldilocks cable needs to be just right. Not loose, not tight. The cable should pull the transmission lever with any movement of the throttle.
Great information thank you very much! I knoww what I'll be doing after work tomorrow.

It almost felt like a bad CVT.
That's very interesting around 55 it almost feels like the drivetrain is fighting itself. If I lift off the pedal that feeling goes away and i feel brief acceleration but due to lifting it doesn't last long. I wonder if 3rd and 4th are fighting. Some more great information thank you very much!

Almost sounds like a engine problem from that description.

I definitely haven't ruled that out, it seemed odd that it doesn't do it in other gears under load around 1500 rpm. I am buying the components I need to give it a tune up and reading in how to setup the single barrel carter best. My 91 with a 4.9l definitely has more power than thus truck but, the 91 is EFI and I'm not sure how drastic that change was for the 300.
