truck loses front wheel, causes car to flip

Im sure many of you have seen

Reminded me of the significant time I spent Texas (yawn). Lots of lifted truck with oversized wheels...in one year I saw 2 of them loose wheels on the highway just like this video

Speaking of which, I should change out the spare tire cable. I saw an old Dodge Ram lose his spare on the highway at 65mph....rolled right past him, along the median and came safely to a stop in heavy traffic. Luckiest day of this life.

Super wide wheels/tires...and a dumb amount of offset...unit bearing turned in it's resignation. And, I'm not believing that wheel under the car could launch it in the air that far.

There's a lot of videos on this out there with limited information but I did see one with details mentioning that the officers on the scene reported that the wheel studs on the Chevy apparently sheared off, and the sole occupant of the Kia walked away with no serious injuries.

From the video looks like the hub was the problem as the rotor was still attached to the wheel. And knowing Chevy's they're hubs aren't that great to begin with even with stock wheels. And it does look like there was some significant offset to those wheels or a spacer being used as the rotor is riding outside the wheel that came apart.

I just ordered a new spare tire hoist.....$180 from online FURD seller. OUCH!

Dont know if I trust SKP or UltraPower or Dorman on RockAuto...certainly not any of those weirdo Chinese direct brands.

Damn last time I checked it was 150…after losing a spare tire thank fully going only about 10mph with an ambulance behind me to light up the sirens I’m weary of even a new assembly. It was pretty crazy in the cab/the rear of truck is bouncing in the air eventually running over the tire of course everyone’s yelling while I m thinking STFU lol announcing we still have brakes and steering. My plan is to rebuild the factory unit with some stainless sailing cable rated for over 10k lbs and add a secondary attachment point.

you can buy them for $75 made by SKP on RockAuto and $45 from Ghina on Amazon, but considering the implications of that massive tire falling...Im not messing with Ghina-jink.

That is the general consensus out there, so much for the accuracy of the news reporter saying the wheel studs sheared

Agreed. That brake rotor was still attached to the wheel. That offset is still not as crazy as some others I have seen. That rotor was still somewhat nested inside the wheel. I have seen some where the entire wheel sits outboard of the brakes.

On another site they are saying that might be a wheel spacer, not a brake rotor. I'm having a hard time seeing anything. edit: I see it now but can't say for sure if it's a rotor or a spacer, Sure looks shiny though.

And here I thought that was just a northern Anoka County thing.
