first off, its a 2003 E-350 super duty with the 7.3 powerstroke with 110k miles, not an f350, theres no option here for a e350. second, in the last year, filter in the water seperator was replaced, as well as the 2 combined lines running from filter/seperator housing running down thru the accesory brackets down to 2 rubber lines, im assuming the go to/from the tank. Regular maintenance also. Never have been full throttle with it and rarely go farther then 50% pedal.
this winter is the first year iv exclusivly used PA fuel. i was thinking maybe they were running a summer blend that was gelling, but idk. When i start it after being plugged in all night, she takes longer to start then it used to, and when cold it doesnt idle up like it used to. if i start it, jump in and take off, by the time i get to the end of the road, seems like its running on 3 cylinders, no throttle responce, and barly stays running. if i let it warm up for 10 min or so, it runs better, but still has a light vibration like 1 cylinder is missing. once up to operating temp it runs perfect. but heres the wierd thing. after idling or driving around my community (dirt roads) at fast idle speed, temp guadge reads normal, so i go out on the road. it accelerates normally, till i get to the 2nd to 3rd gear shift, then i slowly lose power and a bunch of white smoke comes out the pipe. if i back off the pedal for about 5sec, it goes away and afterwards runs normally for the rest of the day. No visable exhaust at all other then that 1 5 second malfunction, no check engine lights, no codes. I never had a problem in the cold before with this truck, even if i forgot to plug it in. this is why i was thinking the fuel is jelling somewhere in the line, maybe a heater os out somewhere, or im right and they are running summer blend up here. idk, this one has me stumped. Any ideas?
Have you put a bunch of 'Anti-gel' in the tank to thin it out? Do you think you may need to change out the fuel filter. (dirt roads) what does your air filter look like?
Be prepared for someone to chime in with “you need injectors”
Have you had a chance to verify post filter fuel pressure? That is a great spot to start.
Also how full is the tank when this happens? It could be time to do some in tank mods to ensure the pump has adequate fuel flow to send up to the engine
havnt done any anti gel, just injector cleaner. i aware of the inevitable injectors replys, lol. i highly doubt its injectors or fuel pressure, since once its up to normal op temp and after the little hiccup at the beginnign of heavy throttle driving, it runs perfectly, if there was a bad injector it would do it all the time. i had this thought tha, since im not familiar with the block heater positions, that there might be one out somewhere, and when i first get on the throttle to go from 5mph to 50 mph, theres a spot somewhere thats now unheated and that 1 spot gelled and finally gets sucked into the injectors, then as soon as that 1 little spot of gelled fuel is passed it runs normally. i really dont know but that theory seems like it fits all the symtoms here. figured id ask here tho cause maybe someone had this issue and solved it with aome 10 dollar part lol. also, air filter is fine. Im pretty sure theres a fuel filter on the frame rail somewhere, but its been to cold and/or to muddy to get unfer it and replace it. but just to reiterate here, it DOES NOT smoke at all, even on cold starts, it ONLY smokes (with a cooresponding loss of throttle) for about 3 to 5 seconds the first time i go out on the road and go from 5mph up to highway speeds, 50 and up. and it ONLY does that one time. never does it again, such as pulling out of a parking lot going back home, or getting on an interstate, ect ect. it is a cold related 1-off problem. i just dont know what
also, iv always ran it with 20 - 40 dollars in the tank, depending on the price of fuel, thats anywhere from 8 to 12 gallons, so around a quater tank. only time iv ever filled it is when i was going from jersey to here, otherwise its a 20 dollar fill
The low power episode with white smoke is textbook low fuel pressure. Why in only one stage of your commute I do not know. Maybe related to the cold fuel warming up? If you can get a gauge to read the fuel pressure you'll know for sure. Detailed instructions are in the FTE Tech Folder stickied above.
I think I'd start with a new fuel filter. The fuel bowl is top center of the engine. Here's a link with van instructions.
