5.4 vs. Diesel

Go diesel. My dad gets over 17.5 mpg towing and we can pass those little imports uphill. I've heard the diesels are virtually indestructable and will last 400,000 mi. You can also get a new chip for it and the chip will supposedly gain 3mpg and a lot of torque and hp.

5.4 vs. Diesel

I get around 10-12 MPG city and about 13-15 highway with my 2000 limited edition, w/ v-10. I've got about 47,000 miles on it. I towed a 17 foot Mako center console from Ohio to the Florida Keys and back (@1400 miles each way) and got about 10-11MPG running about 70 MPH the whole way. I love my Excursion....

No question. Go with the 5.7 diesel! I've only got 2000+ miles (not even close to broken in yet)and getting 15 mpg. combined street/hwy. Oo I had the Banks Stinger kit installed and would be happy to take on any V-10 in 1/4 mile for pinks. Yes it does drink alot of oil at changes but fuel is about 20 cents or more a gallon cheaper so I figure combined with milage, I'm doing just fine

excursion in florida and snow plowing,,, hmm is that an oxymoron or what? heck drop the plow and let the sun melt it.

a truck is only what u need it to be, if u asked more of it, then get the options to match its potential.

ok,, why is he getting the same milage as diesels? id like to hear more from other v10 owners. im with the psd for this truck. imagine ford comming up with this idea.. an excursion with a removable top, tonnuea cover, and make it right for construction guys like me, who want a heavy duty truck, yet cover it up like an suv for the times we get away and want the comfort of a moving camping machine. i bet the plans are on the way, yet chevy threw out their version.

when u can,, take your truck offroad and test those shocks..

If you would like to know! I just traded in 2001 Chev 2500/8.1 Autoride, for a 2003 X PSD limited, and I am very happy i did. The Chev. after 12,000. K was burning 2 Quarts of oil after every 3000 miles, and buring a long trip, the trans would slip (so much for allison). The X just seams like more of a truck. I also had a 1990 2500 excab pickup turbodiesel, after 2500 miles the trans went. Thank "God" for the Lemon Law; Chev had to buy it back. NEVER A CHEV. AGAIN

5.4 vs. Diesel

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-02 AT 07:23 PM (EST)]:-X12 OK,
I have the 6.8 V10 with the 4.30 LS. I am amazed at the pick-up i have with these gears. My mileage is nothing to write home about(city 8-11)(hwy 10-15). But baby she can tow. I can sustain 60 mph in OD up a 6 percent grade. I scare those people who pull up beside me in the turn lane(right side) and try to burn me, HA. Remember Towing and great mpg are oxzy morons. You can have one or the other, but not both.

When did the Allison go into the 2500 Suburbans? Or are you talking about a pickup?

5.4 vs. Diesel

This is from a previous thread and explains my thoughts and why I went V10.
__________________________________________________ __________________
First off - A disclaimer
My experience is largely limited to diesels in heavy trucks, Cat's, Detroit's, and Cummins, so some of my reasons may be true to a lesser extent when dealing with the PSD. I love diesels, you can't compare the feeling of power of a big CAT spooling up, and the smell of diesel in the air on a cold morning gets my blood pumping.

Now, here's my $.02, and why I chose to go gas. I too have an office job and drive a short distance to work most days. So,

Reason #1 - A typical November day would be a cold morning, jump in the truck drive 10 mins to work and shut it off. Start it again at 5 and drive home 10 mins shut it off. That's the quickest way I know of to kill a diesel. Without sufficient warm up and cool down time, and without ever really reaching operating temps, diesels are not very efficient. You greatly increase wear on a diesel (rings) using it for short trips like that, and I'm too impatient to wait for it to warm up and cool down every time I use it. If you're going to get maximum life out of a diesel, it best to operate it for long periods of time, where it can build and maintain heat, and run at maximum efficiency.
Simply put, short trips = short life

Reason #2 - The diesel is just as expensive to operate as the gasser. The fine points of this can be argued, but the $4500 initial price tag and higher cost of routine maintenance will generally offset any increased mileage, and depending where you live, the difference in fuel prices. You'll notice that the best fuel mileage numbers for the diesels are on extended highway trips, around town in stop and start, as with any engine, mileage really suffers. Don't believe the hype of all the high mileage number claims for the diesel, or the V10 for that matter. If you're towing anything or travelling over 50mph, numbers in the 20's are NOT realisitic. Same goes for resale, getting $3000 (or $4000 for that matter) more for a truck that costs $4000 more initially is not "better resale".

Reason #3 - I don't typically haul enough or tow a sufficient load to warrant the diesel, the V10 is more than capable.

Reason #4 - Purely based on comfort. The gas is quieter, cleaner, and generally easier to find fuel for.

Reason #5 - This one may or may not be a factor, but the hard truth is that IF you get into a situation where you have to do engine repairs, diesels are VERY EXPENSIVE to fix in comparison to gassers.

Both are great engines, I based my choice on how I realistically intended to use the vehicle. If you go gas, spend the extra $600 and get the V10, the smile factor is worth it.

5.4 vs. Diesel

I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, BUT 5.4's should NOT even be offered in X's. A friend of mine has one, and even with the 4.30 gears this thing is the biggest DOG any one has ever seen!! You can ABSOLUTELY FORGET about towing ANYTHING! I wouldn't even fully load it with passengers. This is absolutely a no-brainer, V10 or PSD are the ONLY sane choices, unless you want to be a hood ornament for a Kenworth...

i just got a 5.4, I love the truck, wish I had a diezel...
I am currently averaging 18 mpg, but that is not really driving aggresive...
and it really has no power but.. it weights a million lbs and my wife will be driving it until the baby is born.

I am adding an exhaust intake and looking for a chip. right now it will barely get out of its own way but @ 16900 for an 04 eddie bower with dvd. I dont feel complaints are warrented.
