So I have a 1978 ford bronco that I am working on restoring. It is an automatic and the shifter on the column is really sloppy & will only try to crank if it is in neutral. Sometimes it cranks and will start in neutral and other times it will only click. Is there anything I should try to tighten up? All suggestions appreciated!
As long as you dont have a tilt column, then everything to make it new again should be available.
If it clicks, and I am assuming that the solenoid is clicking? If yes, then your problems may be something other than the sloppy column shifter.
Start with a new column bell, and see what that does for tightening it up. The neutral safety switch may need some adjustment, as well.
I bet the lack of starting in only neutral or not at all is because the steering column internals are worn out and that translated down to the NSS switch on the side of the trans.
NSS on the dvrs side of the trans. Your NSS IS NOT ON TOP OF THE COLUMN.
Yes this is for a tilt wheel, but gets you in the ball bark with fairly good seats.
