well everyone i just got my first lay off notice. i used to work for hemlock hill rv in southington, CT. so ive been going around and ive checked back at a couple places that i knew of(torrington ford, custom coach in southington) and CC isnt crazy bout my hours(college and all) but there going to talk about it. torrington ford isnt busy right now but the guy wants me when he does pick up(maybe in a couple weeks). so since its only been a couple days its not like i expect something right away. in the process of thinking about other places my dad brought up the subject of there not being any RV shops around were im at. (hemlock hill rv is 45 minutes south from my house) and theres no one north east or west within atleast a couple hours even tho theres a couple campgrounds with in 20 minutes. so we were talking and we thought maybe one idea would be to do my own "traveling RV shop" you know set up my truck with all the tools i need and do alittle advertising. anyone here have there own little business like this? weather its on the side or if i can do good enough to be my only income ide still be scared of the consequences if i screwed something up. my next question is is there any one on here around the CT, MA, NY area?? our campground is in catskill, NY and that would get me started anyways. well anyways any advice would be appreciated.
It sounds like it might be worth a try. The RVers are a well-funded and well-connected bunch, so you might want to try to scout out a good market using the web:
No matter how small or large you make the business you are thinking about, get a huge insurance policy. Think about your financial responsibility should something even relatively small happen as a result of your work. Always protect yourself and your new business. Good luck if you go this route!
Dc hit it on the head. The RV travler is an excellent source for information, also get into tvnex.link.. they have several sites that will be able to help you out.. Good luck, and most of all have fun.
Visit all your local RV parks, introducing yourself and dropping off handfuls of business cards could create a lot of business. Most people don’t know they have a problem until they set up camp and then finding something that doesn’t work. Most would love to have the problem fixed in a couple of hours, verses running the weekend or trip.
A guy around here did that for quite a few years, he helped his wife through college so I guess he did ok. I have an old motor home and do all the work on it myself, I bought parts from him, he could give me the best deal for several hundred miles and that was delivered to my doorstep. I told him to make sure he was making something, not selling me at cost, he said not to worry about that he was making money on the deal. I referred him to several people, they really liked the fact that he came to them, no hassle. His wife found a job in another state so it's back to finding a good parts source for me and a mobile rv repair guy for the folks around here that used him.
Good Luck!
