rear main ?

Hi guys! Is it necessary to use RTV sealant anywhere on the rear main cap on a new rebuild of a 351m? I'm using one of those rubber split seals not the rope type. Thanks! Ken,

Yes, after you have installed the rear main seal in the cap, before you assemble the cap to the block you should apply sealer to the corner area where the bearing cap contacts the block just behind where the bolts go in, close to where the oil pan gasket end seal fits. Apply a small amount of sealer to both the cap and the block in this area and wait the normal amount of time to let it set up & 'skin' then assemble.

Hopefully, this is not too late 4U. But I suggest that you look at the picture/instructions in a Clymer (or whatever) manual. Bill's explanation is great but is short of the 1000 words needed! No offence, Mr. Beyer.

Ecuri, Yeah I already have the cap installed. I did find a picture of the application of the sealer in a Haynes manual before I installed the cap. the picture did confirm that I was understanding the part Bill was talking about. ( the back half of the outside corners of the mating surfaces ) but the book also said to run a bead across back 1/4 inch out from the split seal to those outside corners. At least that's how I was reading it. Thank you sir nice to know you was looking out for me! And thank you again Bill! I'm going to drop it in this weekend. Ken,

Also even though it's too late. It's good to turn the seal halfs slightly so their mating surface is off set from the main's and put a small dab of sealer on each seal end..
