Unidentified spring

No matter how many pictures you take during a restoration, there’s always one you should have taken but didn’t. Sigh.

For the life of me I cannot remember what this incredibly long spring does and I don’t have a picture
of it. 23.5” hook end to hook end. Ebrake maybe? I’m at a loss. Anyone have a clue?

It was in the box I labeled “engine” (possibly by mistake) so I was thinking an abnormally long throttle return spring, but the darn thing is longer than the intake manifold, and this is the way that I set up the return spring (much shorter) based on the pictures I had of the stock setup.

It looks very much like the parking brake spring from my '76 F250 that broke from being too rusty.

Would anyone know where I might find one of these to purchase? My search has thus far been unsuccessful.

3rd on park brake spring, unless you want the carb linkage to hook to the rear bumper. #2A651

Y’all are the best. Thanks so much. I thought it was parking brake related and had been foolishly tossed in the engine bin, but couldn’t figure out exactly where it went until the pics and diagrams were posted.

It could be a clutch fork return spring.

This is what I used for my parking brake spring. Dorman Help makes a generic replacement spring (#29003) that can be bent and cut to fit if yours needs replacing. Autozone usually has them in stock whereas Orielly usually has to order them.

You can use that as a throttle/gas pedal tension spring, that out to help you keep your foot outa it. Lol

After a lot of digging this morning, I found the following thread that shows great images of the parking brake cables from a 73 long bed. Of course, the venerable Rich chimed in with some great information. Mike has a great pic as well.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ke-detail.html

It seems like there are two different setups. Mine uses the version that Rich has where there isn't an equalizer bar bolted to the cross member. Hopefully this helps someone in the future because the diagrams in the service manual or parts catalogs can make you think you either lost parts or lost your mind if you don't have the bar that bolts to the cross member.

Mystery spring

The spring that keeps the clutch fork against the adjustment rod is pretty long also.

I have the C6 so that wasn’t a possibility for me.

The equalizer bar setup is for a half ton and the two into one with the long spring is 3/4 ton. I know that much. But I can still be wrong.

Yessir, I noticed that Mike’s truck was the F-100 and it had the setup that’s different that yours and mine. Does your spring connect to a hole in the crossmember on the back side. It looks like you shortened your spring and connected it on the back as opposed to the F-100 setup where it connects into a hole on the front of the crossmember. That hole is present on my truck but I’m not sure if us 3/4 guys are meant to use it or not. The spring doesn’t look like it will exert any tension if I use it…
