I need to replace the water pump on my 1976 F350 supercab with 460 engine. Can anyone provide recommendation for best brand to purchase and any heads up regarding R&R?
Thanks
I bought an Edelbrock for a build but not done yet. Whatever you get, take the new gasket, lay it on an empty cardboard box, outline the shape and holes with a pencil or marker. poke holes in the bolt circles you have drawn. As you remove bolts put them in the respective holes. I helps me when doing unfamiliar engines, might work for you.
I've been putting on the new ones from Orielly's on everything for years and have yet to have one fail. and if they do they have a lifetime warranty. normally I look for something better quality and more expensive on everything I do, and sometimes it's a waste of time and money.
Check out your backing plate good and get a new one if you need it. normally they're not included with a new pump.

100% correct and 1000 times awesome! Do not over tighten the one that go in the back plate. They strip easy. The cardboard pattern will help you remember which ones they are. Use a red marker and circle them on the cardboard, as a visual reminder come reinstall time.
So they charge you 3 times as much to put the same chinese bearing and seal in your core and give you a 1 year warranty vs a lifetime warranty . don't get me wrong I love originality but sometimes it just doesn't make sense .
Spoke to the mechanic that will be doing water pump R&R and he recommended I get a Motorcraft pump for the replacement. Any opinions on that recommendation?
I'll be replacing the thermostat, hoses, etc. in conjunction with the pump replacement, and was wondering if I should use a 180-deg. or a 195-deg. thermostat? My truck, 1976 F350, 460, C6 is driven less than 1000 miles per year and I live in Northern VA.
Thanks for replies
Motorcraft is fine but it's probably made new in China or rebuilt in Mexico with chinese parts like all the rest. the amount of parts sold for these old rigs just doesn't support much competition, you get the same part and it'll come in whatever box you like best. 90% of the Mororcraft parts I've bought in the last few years were made in China, Ford doesn't make them they're contracted out.
Fortunately, in the case of water pumps the imported junk seem to hold up pretty well.
Years ago I bought one of the Duralast pumps from Auto Zone. It also has a lifetime warranty. It is a new pump. I painted it and installed it. It fit well and has been working well since then.
I also bought a stainless steel backing plate from a place in Australia.
If any of those bolts go into a coolant passage use sealant on the threads.
