I had a 2015 XLT 5.0 4x4 Supercab that I loved but unfortunately totaled it. I am about to order the same truck in a 2023 model, and the big question I have is how good is the 10-speed automatic as far as handling occasional heavy duty hauling, performance and overall reliability? Sure seems like way more gears than needed. Is there someone out there who has experience with both? Thanks.

I had a 2015 XLT 3.5 Ecoboost 4X4 and a 2015 Lariat 3.5 Ecoboost 4x4 with the 6 speed and never had an issue with either. I then had a 2019 Lariat 3.5 Ecoboost 4X4 with the 10R80 ten speed and that transmission was hard shifting and had the main valve control body replaced twice and still shifted terribly. I now have a 2022 Lariat Powerboost 4X4 and the ten speed is smooth as silk, no issues. Oh, I towed my 6500 lb travel trailer with all the trucks and really never had any issues while towing.
You do hear a lot fo complaints about hard shifts and "unusual behavior" with this 10 speed, but as far as "failing" I haven't heard much, even under heavy use. I think more gears are better for towing.
Wow that's a pretty good track record! Thanks for your replies. I'm planning to go with another 5.0 XLT Super Cab. I plan to test drive a 5.0 version soon just to see how it feels.
i liked the 10R80 so much I installed one in my 1966 F100. Its been fantastic. I have a F150 on order with the 10R80 5.2 v8 combo. (Heavy duty version of 10R80) Can’t wait.
so many transmissions ford has. The 6R140 is the very heavy duty version of 6R80. Better yet the 10R140.
you will love the 10R80 in tje F150 with any engine option.

oh, and the 10 spd autos are made to skip gears on both up and down shifts. Depending on load and throttle input etc. when a gear is not needed it can/will be skipped.
Heaviest I've pulled with my '21 5.0 10 speed was about 7700 lbs and I was very impressed with both the torque of the relatively small v8 and the transmission. The 6 speed is generally considered to be a bulletproof transmission though, not many complaints I've ever seen other than I think an issue with some cooler lines corroding in the rust belt. I have always had odd shifting behavior with the 10 speed though in normal light footed driving. When you're in tow/haul or sport it shifts great for me, or in normal when you drive with a heavier foot. When I drive normally is when I get odd "flares" and clunky shifting. It seems like most of the issues are all in their tuning. I've been contemplating a tune mainly to change how the trans behaves in normal driving (sport is too aggressive and holds gears too long to use normally) and probably to disable cylinder deactivation.
Y'all have quieted my concerns about the 10-speed for sure. I ordered my 2023 XLT 5.0 4x4/FX4 on Saturday (3/18/23). The trailer towing package is great and has the integrated trailer brake and the tailgate step which I find handy now that I'm past jumping up and down. I ordered the extended range tank, safe, and built in NAV. I got used to the Ford NAV in my 2015, and prefer it to the phone maps. I'm driving a 2021 Ranger Lariat 4x4 with the 2.3 EB and 10-speed right now, and I see what BeardedCap means about odd flares and clunky shifting during normal driving. Actually, that's why I started this thread. Thanks for all the insight.
