1978 Engine Identification
Check out some of the photos, have a picture of the stamping on the heads.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts examination can tell them apart.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
At least is has the Saginaw power steering box AND it has a 2nd one? Very interesting was it a snow plow truck? What is the valve on the dvrs side inner fenderwell with the lines and the lever handle connected to? Was this a logging truck and does it have a big winch on the front?
Will have to go and look at what you mentioned before, any idea on the part’s compatibility between the 429 and the 460?
Compatibility of starter for a 429/460 same same. AFAIK even a 351M-400 is the same starter. Now there is a difference in between a manual and auto trans starter.
"Starters & Distributors –if you have a 351M/400 pull off the factory distributor and the factory starter. Why? Because they will bolt on and work perfectly on your new 429/460 engine. If your 429/460 has a points-type distributor (most pre-1975 engines) then you should reuse your Bronco's Duraspark II electronic distributor.
One other neat little item you can use on your 429/460 is a 92-93 7.5L F-Series gear-reduction starter. They are smaller, weigh less, and have more torque than the standard full-size Ford 351M/400/429/460 starters. If you plan to install headers on your Bronco with a 429/460 engine, then the gear-reduction starter will give you a little more room to work with in a cramped engine compartment. You can purchase these starters from most auto parts stores. And do a bit of a rewire."
And some diagrams just in case.
I know you do not have this set up, but a good diagram of the Sag p/s pump.
Thanks for the info on the starter, will check it out.
My copy is 6th printing in 1980, but he goes into great depth on parts for 351C, 351M, 400, 429, 460 engines, interchanges, identifying, etc. I see the cover photo has changed, same info. I doubt much has changed.
It is a 429 or 460.

This is the answer you're looking for.
As for yor parts interchange between 429/460 question, they're just like 351M/400s....everything is the same except pistons and crankshaft through 1978-ish (well, 1973-ish on 429s anyway). I say "-ish" due to model year cutoff dates.
After 79, the blocks and cranks changed on the 460 to an external balance so the flywheels, flexplates, and harmonic balancer spacers from those 460s won't work on a 429. I do not know if a 429 crankshaft will physically fit in a 79 and later block due to the cylinder bore protrusion into the crankcase for use with the externally-balanced crankshafts.
Good luck!
