Hello! I currently have a 2001 f150 super crew lariat 2wd. My engines starting to go now that it’s at 160k miles. I am planning on restoring it though and turning it into a show truck as the body and frame are still perfect. I want to rebuild the engine and give it a serious boost in hp and torque without blowing it up. Do any of you have any recommends on parts to put in it so it can comfortably run around 5 thousand rpm and throw it up to around 300 to 400 hp ish if that’s even possible? It’s my first time upgrading parts in an engine. Thank you for the help!
The general consensus is that you can get some decent improvements from a tuner and changing your gear ratio. I think that cams, pistons, and other internals won't give you much of a return on your $$.
After that, you'll have to put some boost on it to get to the next level. There is not a ton of aftermarket performance stuff out there for these trucks. Several folks have used mustang supercharger kits with some fabrication.
After looking into this for my own vehicles, it became clear that I could probably buy a Coyote or a 6.2 truck for just a couple bucks more than it would cost to wake up the 5.4.
Thats just my opinion though.
