I recently picked up my first ever truck. 1986 F150 4x4 and since there is no badging I believe it to be the XL. I don’t know much about these and was not really looking for a truck but my neighbor was selling and I liked the story. The story: They bought the truck brand new in September of 86 for $12,970 and have logged every mile and dollar spent since then and thats why I purchased it. Figured a 1owner without any body rust was somewhat rare. Not to mention the few times a year I need a truck. The specs I know so far: 5.8L HO motor, automatic transmission, 8’ bed, AC(although not working), and radio. I think it is in good shape for its age and has had a lot of maintenance done. It does seem to be leaking fluids in a few places, nothing major but a few drips on the driveway. It looks like some seals are in my future. Anyway I have and will continue to enjoy reading these threads, learning about these trucks, and looking at all the pictures. Makes me want a lift and new wheels and tires!
Welcome to FTE
Nice looking truck, me I would keep it just the way it is as you dont see many this old still almost factory stock like yours.
But as they say it is yours to build / do as YOU wish.
Just above the radio dose it say custom or XL or XLT?
With out a head liner I want to say in may not be a XL either.
I cant remember if my 81 Ranger had that above the radio or not?
But my 81 Custom did have it above the radio.
It now sports a XL as part of the rebuild
Then again maybe by 86 they did not mark above the radio?
I dont have a link but you can get a Marti report on the truck so you know just how it was built and left the factory.

Thank you! It does not say custom but does appear that there was an emblem of some sort stuck there as there is some adhesive residue. Best photo I have right now. Thanks for the advice on leaving it stock. Several have told me that so maybe just some different tires. Yes the engine bay is very intimidating to me. Any advice on cleaning it up without messing anything up? Lots of degreaser?
On the engine bay, I'd clean it up, too. You can just spray some engine degreaser on it and hose it off. Some folks put a plastic bag over the distributor to keep it from getting soaked, but I usually don't worry to much about it; just try to keep from hitting it directly with pressurized water.
