knocking during idle
I have a 94 EB 5.8 with 152,000 miles. There is some sort of light knocking sound coming from the engine during idle. As soon as I give it any gas at all the knock goes away. It is also not consitant, it comes and goes. The Ford dealer I spoke to said this was normal in Bronco's and nothing to be concerned with, but I am. Any suggestions?
Tell the dealer to bite you. Knock is not normal. But yours doesnt seem to be a big issue at this point. At idle, it could be just a bit of slop due to wear on the engine. Sometimes you can fix this by re-torqing your rocker arms under the valve covers. Or you could just need new valve springs, or...... Could be quite a few things, but I am going to bet on engine wear. Keep an ear on it. If it starts to get worse quickly, you will be looking at a rebuild. Normal driving wont kill it but if you start trailer towing or cross country driving then you could be looking at causing it to go bad pretty quickly. Excess load can cause a slight knock to turn into a hard knock and possible thrown rod.
