I've had every type of bed cover imaginable. Right now I have the BAKFlip, but I'm ready for a change. My truck is a long bed and opening and closing the cover is a hassle (heavy and awkward) and it partially blocks the view of my fifth wheel hitch both over the shoulder and from the bed camera. I had a Roll-N-Lock on a previous LB Super Duty and I liked it, only replacing it when I went with a topper. At that time, I had a bumper pull trailer. I think it locked into the tailgate so I would lose the use of the power tailgate function. That would be a minor bummer. I'm guessing at 1/3 open it would offer a little protection to items pushed forward in the bed while allowing full access to the hitch. I think some other covers stay open in any position. I don't think I want a power cover as carrying another fob seems ridiculous. Powder coated aluminum or vinyl over aluminum? Which retractable covers do you all recommend and which characteristics do you consider essential?
I recently installed a Retrax Pro XR that I found on craigslist. For me it's the perfect combination of ease of open/close, open to any position, and secure storage. The canister takes up less space that I expected. I previously had a BakFlip F1 on a F150. Over time, the cover seemed to get heavier. Possibly water in the panels? I didn't like the cover blocking the window when fully open. The Retrax is letting a small amount of water in during heavy rain, but I haven't tried to figure out where it is coming in yet. Possibly the tailgate. I might look at adding their tailgate seal.
I just ordered the Retrax Pro XR. Not powered. Black powder-coated aluminum.
I didn’t want to fold a cover up and block my rear windows, so retractable makes sense. This supports t-slot rails for cargo carriers, bike carriers, etc., which I plan to leverage - there are times that I plan to tow my Jeep for weekend off-roading events, and I can use a rooftop tent above the bed of the truck.
Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to tow both a 5000lb pig of a Wrangler and a fifth wheel at the same time with a Super Duty. Maybe I should have bought a Peterbilt.
I have a Retrax Pro XR, manual operate on my 2020 so 3 years now and no issues. I also notice evidence some water evidence of near the rear sides between the wheel wells and tail gate but not to concern to investigated.
Heavy duty aluminum slats secure anything in the bed, 5th wheel hitch covered and when rolled open to any position view is unobstructed from cab. Compatible with most T-slot accessories.
Will be on the high side price wise so but will hold up well and last.

I went with a Roll n Lock on our 22. The new ones do not lock into the tailgate so you can use the power tailgate.
This is our 2nd one and had no issues.
I have the Pace Edwards Bedlocker on my 450 and love it. I carry a remote in the truck but I had my installer flush mount a switch so I don't have to carry it all the time.

Another vote from me for the Roll-n-Lock. I'm on my 4th truck with a Roll-n-Lock. I reused one on my short beds but had to get a new one for my LB.
Like you, I have had ALL types of bed covers. I'm on my 2nd Retrax Pro MX tonneau cover and absolutely love them both. Reach out to https://tonneaucoversworld.com.They will save you some money and will ship most anywhere.
Pace Edwards is a great unit. Sits flush with the rails and that 1 inch can make a difference. Locks in at 1 foot intervals which is great when towing the 5th wheel. Does not interfere with tailgate operation. Also looks good.
Looks like the RetraxPRO is a popular choice and I definitely like the option of locking it in place at any position and would probably go for the XR just in case I ever wanted to use a rack. I am very surprised at the price premium over the Roll-N-Lock. RetraxPRO XR = $2349 and the Roll-N-Lock M Series = $1519.

They are expensive! I got lucky and found my retrax on craigslist for $850. The guy bought it new and had it on his garaged 2018 truck. Looks like new. I'm trying to find a deal on a roof rack for it now. They are also expensive!
Another feature of the retrax is the latch handle pops up and you use that to walk the tonneau open or closed instead of the webbing strap hanging in the bed.
Retrax ProXR ... Wait for a sale and get $200 off unless you find a better deal while waiting. I just put bike racks on ours for a trip. I have been happy with the entire setup.
