Hydra Tuner reprogrammed, now No Start

When Wes444 helped me pull the
PCM and we installed the Hydra Tuner,
we only put in 3 codes to verify that it works.

Drove home just fine,
Today, after thinking up how I want it programmed,
I wrote a new list on paper, and reprogrammed it.

added 5 more codes.... don't make a lot of sense to me....
I just can't believe the contacts are "corroded" in just 3 days time.

Verified that the correct code is used.
Took a picture of the code before we shut down the Hydra Tuner program.

any ideas?

Wes and I are stumped right now....
don't really want to pull the PCM out again, and scotch bright the contacts again,
BUT ---

Did you pull the hydra to program it?

Not necessary, it has a USB Cable to go to a Windows laptop.

you must have the KEY in the OFF position.
the Hydra programming app tests for that when it boots up.

there are two cables from the addon chip board.

a ribbon cable to the Settings switch.

the USB cable to the laptop.

I reprogrammed mine in the truck, also, no issues. No ideas to help, just throwing in, that should not be the issue.

Could be pats, I've had some tunes in the past that would not play nice if the pats module was connected.
Did you check the pats enable/disable option?

First time I put my hydra in worked great for a day, then problems. I pulled it, cleaned up the contact points on PCM thoroughly and has been good since. Sounds like you need to pull it. Second time I used a dental pick between the contacts on the board. It's not obvious how much it takes and I was nervous about over doing it and fudging the contacts.

I will simply caution against cleaning the contacts too much. No need to make a new problem.

If the truck ran well with the original tunes then I consider that good evidence the contact connections are fine.

Since you have an Excursion, sometimes loading the Hydra files is not as easy as installing a simple relay, even if you are using the USB cable and leaving the chip in/on the PCM.

I will quote our friend Cody below in an effort to see if this is your issue, follow his instructions and the instructions in the video.

Slept on this problem all night:

1) the Tuner worked just fine when I drove home, an hour and 15 minutes

2) Hydra does NOT tell you a damn thing about the necessary Procedure to Reprogram the chip.

3) when I drove home, it was on position 06 and I did not think that part through.

4) Reprogrammed it 3 times, without changing the Switch Setting.

No Start, every time.

Frustrated, I watched YouTube all night and fell asleep, but my brain was clicking on this problem. As my Avocation has been in Electronics since 1958, and Digital stuff since 1968, surely I could figure this out.

Lunch time: ate a sandwich, and kept mulling on it.

Decided to turn KEY ON, and watch the Hydra Switch.

It rolls through a bunch of Hex numbers and settled on 06 display.

Ah ha!

The new program in 06 is not the same as it was when I drove home.

I set the switch back to 00 like it came from the factory, and 00 is STOCK ford programming. Good for Diagnostics, etc

Powered laptop down to make sure the USB connection is closed Properly.

Disconnect USB cord.

Key ON, WTS goes away, click Varoom !!!

I am going to email Hydra a nasty letter, that they need to tell folks about how to Reprogram the chip.

Rolled the switch up thru the numbers, and the Engine idle speeds responded as they should

Sounds like it was user error, but I could be wrong.

There are numerous videos out there on how to program the Hydra. One of which I have pasted below.

watched the video, at one point, I clicked on the PATS at the bottom and set to PATS

programmed it, still No Start.

set switch to 00 and it starts and goes thru the Tunes just fine now.

my only question is, is there a real difference in the tunes, if it works now, and IF I go to the trouble of forcing each Tune to PATS.

the thing I don't like about saving each individual tune like they did, it does not save the Name or position number.

I think I would save the tune, then rename it to Pos-1 Whisper mode

and so forth. then if it is needed again, it will be there.

Went for a test drive around our Rural 1 mile square roads.

My Favorite setting is Fuel Sipper,
the throttle control and transmission shifts feel like my '01 K1500 4x4 Suburban.

60hp Daily Driver is mildly aggressive, harder and firmer shifts, set throttle at 2500 RPM and it lags down a bit between each shift... will make a very good metro driver.

80hp Daily Driver is more aggressive but still no smoke.

80hp Performance is like I was on the 1/8th mile Drag Strip and poured out the coal smoke.
- - - - won't be using that, but just had to give it a try

it attacked 2500 RPM and never glanced back, was at 65 mph by the time I reached the next Property Line, about 1/8 mile or more.

I am very pleased with my investment... - -

Next stop, AEM water/alcohol injection for pulling over the mountain passes...
actually, I probably won't need it, as I am in no hurry to get anywhere.
BUT, my son, WANTS IT

The only thing id say about this, is dont put whisper in slot 1. I know you used it as an example, however, i was told from the gentleman who wrote my tunes, that 00 is stock, and 01 is your base tune, and everything builds, from that tune. Therefore, it needs to be your base, driving tune, not, like i did, high idle. Or another non driving tune. And i will say that since i flipped 01 to daily driver, and put high idle in slot 02, i have fewer codes. Pretty sure my overboost, and hpop are my code causes, at this point, anyway.

Thank you for that learned moment.
why does Hydra not explain that in ?Depth?

I will reprogram it tomorrow as you suggest, plus explicitly make each program PATS compatible.
