Yeah you're over thinking it, for gvwr it is total weight. Actual weight of truck minus gvwr is payload.
manufacturers do strange things on this, from what it seems like it's more based on the tires they equip the truck with... they also need to stay under gvwr for some states on certain models. But that is another topic....
My axle ratio is 373 open, I'm confident, even though technically I'll be overweight by everything I see I'll be fine with a few hundred lbs overweight.

.I too am technically overweight. Truck handles great. No concern. Axle weight ok. But the tires were a bit close. I didn't feel like upgrading a couple grand for tires and then wheels. So ordered the dually I should have ordered last year.
