Hi guys, I have a trac-loc 3.55 ‘96 10.25 where the carrier races have spun even with caps torqued down. A new timken race spins and old races have a light wear pattern and I can fit a .0016 feeler leaf between. I think that housing is shot and I’m not comfortable rigging it with ****** and shims to work.
So, I bought a ‘92 10.25 and the plan is to swap in the 3.55 trac loc carrier for the benefit of tracloc and the later style longer pinion/yoke.
wanted to see what you guys recommend if this is a good idea, I know tracloc is not the best but this is a low buck but new bearings/seals/brakes build. Wasn’t sure if these TL carriers were known to tend to spin races like I see has happened or create similar problems? I realize I can go out and buy a $900 new carrier and $250 gear set but was hoping to avoid that if this could be run.

Brian, Thanks for theTL differentials 'blessing'. Runout less than .001" so this carrier is a runner. Both axles rotate same direction and clutches don't appear to be worn (without taking it apart) so am going to run it and get more miles out of them. I know there's a tool out there to check break free torque on the clutches but worst that can happen is it runs as an open diff.
Replacing gear set, did the carrier in the freezer, RG in the oven trick, then locktite and star torqued the bolts. Cross pin was worn and swapped in a NOS. Made setup bearings with the old.
I can't get these pictures smaller, anyone have any issues with this pattern? Backlash on 3 different places was .010
Original pinion shim was .023", ended up with .025" for this pattern Coast side seems a bit heavy on the heal but might run this ring and pinion log sheet and shims setup
Looks good to me,I'd run it. FTI, I've always read that when setting up a used gear set,you go by the coast side pattern only. I can't get used to that and still go by both.
