When was the first time your Mom & Dad first saw each other ? I mean before they were married. I don't have the luxury of knowing that and was wondering if any of you knew that ?
My Dad was stationed overseas during WWII and was playing for the RCAF hockey team which included Milt Schimdt,Bobby Bauer,Porky Dumart.
At the time,in the Winter of 44, he had a three day leave and was in the City of Durham, England with a bunch of his buddies. My 26 yr old future Dad and his buddies were on the skating rink fooling around by skating amoungst the girls and this one girl fell to the ice right smack on her backside. The other guys kept skating around but my Dad stopped to help this girl up and to make sure she was okay and also to apologise for "the guys" horseplay. One thing led to another &
the rest is history. He married her 4 months later and she came to Canada as a war bride. My Mother passed away in July of 85,4 weeks after her and my Dad renewed their vows after 40 years marriage.
My dad used to manage a Western Sizzlin steak house in Bryan, Tx. (My grandfather owned it). One time my mother was out lookin for shish-k-bob sticks and she couldn't find any. So she stopped by the steak house to see if she could buy some from them. Well she talked with my dad and he was interested so tehy went out that nite. 2 months later, my folks for hitched. They have now been married for 25 years!
My parents met in high school in 1957. My mother was the oldest of three girls in a "good" family from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania (in the hills west of Pittsburgh), and my father was a hoodlum from the wrong side of the tracks. His mother was divorced and rented a basement apartment in nearby Dormont so he could attend Mt. Lebanon High. Their first date was to a movie in 1958, and my dad still has the ticket stubs. After high school, my mom went to nursing school in Pittsburgh, and my dad tried to join the army so he could go to Korea. They rejected him three times because of a heart condition. The last time he was on the train before the docs caught up with him and took him off somewhere in Indiana. He decided to go back to Marquette, Michigan, where he was born and grew up, and go to Northen Michigan U. He flunked out in a year, went back to Pittsburgh, and got a good-paying job in the J&L steel mill. He started dating my mother again, and asked her to marry him in 1961. Her father agreed only if dad quit the mills and went back to college. He returned to Northern Michigan, got his degree in 1964, and they were married. 38 years, two kids and three grandkids later, they are still going strong.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Jul-02 AT 10:53 AM (EST)]Down in Arkansas there is Quitchita National Forest. My dad had gone to school for wildlife management and ended up being there cleaning trees in the area, and my mom was working for the Garbage company and they both somehow meet out there. My granpa went over to where they were getting trash an gave them a job spraying and knocking down trees. Somewhere down the road they got hitched and are still married.
At least that's the story I got out of them, they both had different views of it.
My dad pulled my mom over for speeding hahaha!!! And being the persistent man he is he finally got her number out of her and they started dating and got married.
My dad went to work for my grandparents driving truck and thought that my mother was a spoiled little brat. She looked like she was 13 but she was actually in her early 20's and going to collage. My uncle finnally introduced them and talked them into going out and the rest is history
Dad was a pharmacist. The local drug store had a soda fountain (didn't they all?). A friend of my Mom's worked at the fountain and Dad was new in town (from New Rochelle NY). The friend introduced them. That was about 40 years ago.
In the early seventies, my dad had just bought his first big fishing boat (87' Gulf shrimper for those interested) and he was tendering with it in Southeast Alaska. He had left the boat for a week or so between openings to fly down and visit his parents. He got back a few days early, and went to his stateroom to go to sleep. When he lays down, he feels something move in the bunk. He leaps out of bed and runs into the galley to tell his deckhand, Kris(a freind of my mom's at the time). She said it was her friend she let stay over. So, long story short my dad kept trying to hang out with her more and more and finally she ended up helping him on the boat and they were married two years later. They were divorced a few months ago after 24 (I think) years of marriage.
