I have seen various methods to wire auxiliary backup lights. One method seems to be the simplest is to splice into the backup wire in the trailer harness directly. Several other methods add a relay controlled by the backup light harness but with the power coming from a line strung to the battery. I assume low wattage LED pods would not be an issue coming directly from the trailer towing harness.....?
Low amp draw and definitely tap in at the trailer harness and not one of the wires to the brake lights (so I've read). I have (2) 6" oval white reverse lights tied in this way and they work fine. I was considering adding 2 more reverse lights into the mix and I don't foresee a problem.
Lights wired to come on in reverse or by upfitter.
Also installed toggle switch as I only want the lights to come on in reverse when I'm plowing so in the summer I switch them off. Can still turn on via upfitter.
No, I am a moron. I custom ordered the truck and did not include the $165 upfitter option. I was thinking about adding it now until I added up the cost.
Can you explain how you did this? I am looking to do something similar for reverse lights.
Do you have a toggle for the lights to come on with the backup lights and you have the upfitter switch to turn them on whenever you want?

Yes exactly. Upfitter switch to turn on whenever I want.
Toggle switch on, lights come with backup lights, toggle off, lights will not come on with backup lights.

Not with a pre-made harness, but this basically is the same as I wire mine back in the days before upfitter switches. I could illuminate the back-up lights with a toggle switch I installed in the cab, and they'd illuminate with the back-up lights. I did not have the in-line shut-off for the automatic side, but I like that idea. Having the option for manual illumination is great for early morning trailer hitching and riverside driftboat launches, navigating dark driveways, and closing gates behind the truck after pulling through.
Last weekend I ran wire to the back of the truck from the upfitter relay bundle on my '22, but I've yet to decide what lights to get. I don't think I'm going to wire them into the truck back-up lights this time though.
Planning this for my 03 F250, would someone be so kind as to provide me with details of how to do the rear spots with activation by switch and/or by normal backup light operation.
I am in the process of my rear lighting/trailer lighting project.
I am using the reverse light override harness from Limitless Auto Works.
I will the ability to activate the reverse lights on the truck/any auxiliary rear lights and any lights for reverse lights for a trailer via an upfitter switch.
I just started researching this modification and have not started diagraming yet, so I am still looking into this. I did look at the Limitless Auto Works option but it does not appear to be compatible with the 03 model, or am I missing something?
A couple of years ago I picked up an F650 lower dash panel and a mounting plate (RiffRaff Diesel) and have yet to put it in. At the time I didnt have a need for added switches but figured I would eventually. I am not anxious to cut into my dash panel as it is black and I have not found many black panels, just the tan or grey, and mine is pristine. So the F650 lower dash panel was perfect for my future needs. Not sure I need to use 6 Carling rocker switches at this time, but I do have plans on adding an inverter that I would like to switch off/on as needed, and a few other needs, such as the spots for when I am reversing or hooking up a trailer at night, etc.
