Hello,
A buddy and I just rebuilt a 2003 6.0 diesel and i have some questions regarding the HPOP and air test. All components are put back together with new top end o-ring kit, new hpop, new oil cooler, and the list goes on. we wanted to do an air test through IPR to check for leaks. Note: the engine currently doesn't have any oil in it.... hooked up to IPR port, put air to the engine and we can hear air gurgling in the oil filter tube. Not a lot of air but definitely coming from there. Question i have is, since there is no oil in the system is this going to happen? if there was oil all the way through would the air gurgling then stop due to being pressured up with oil? looking for answers before I start removing parts to get to the HPOP again.. Any help greatly appreciated. if your looking for readings through diagnostics we havent got that far yet-due to the gurgling on the pressure test...
Don't have the answer one way or the other. My only experience with HPOP was a gentle gurgling through what sounded like oil filter area. Installed new pump and air tested, Had exact same sound, however the new pump worked and built pressure fine.
I would guess if the pump was fine before it is likely good
if it were me being that far back together I would fill it with oil and crank it over your all but there
there is some risk taking it back apart and nicking a seal or oring
the viscosity of the oil helps seal the system to a point so alittle gurgling on a dry system might be ok
It should crank up within a minute or two of cranking if not you know something went wrong and no need to crank endlessly causing damage to electronics or starters
You need to monitor your Hpop pressure while cranking. Run your monitoring system if available (Forscan or Torque is best) I would keep the batteries on charge and make sure your system is primed with oil. You need that 500 psi to get everything rolling (injectors). You might want to remove your FICM Relay and crank for 10 20 seconds to prime without damaging FICM. You can also use your power cable quick release to turn motor over with key off to get a start on prime before going for ignition. Thats the best way.
