Hey all- my oil change warning won’t reset on my 07 Explorer 4.0. Believe me I’ve tried a bunch of times. So annoying. Got my hands on a used dash cluster. Took the dash apart, removed the cluster and plugged the replacement in. The oil minder reset, 1st try, but the motor won’t crank. Plugged the original back in and it fired right up. Anyone experience this. Any idea how the fix the oil monitor or get the other cluster to work? Thanx in advance
I think your model year stores the key code data (PATS) in the cluster. The used cluster needs PATS reset to your vehicle. You need a good scan tool to troubleshoot. Look into Forscan (forscan.org). It can read and clear codes and can probably reset PATS on your used cluster. There is a big learning curve with Forscan so be prepared to read and research. But once you have put in the time, you can do most any repair and diagnosis wtih the software.
The other option is to pay a pro to do everything. For some this is the only realistic solution.
Don is right on. Per the Ford Factory Service Manual:
Installation Installation
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Following installation of the instrument cluster (IC), download the module configuration information and the vehicle identification number (VIN) from the scan tool into the new instrument cluster (IC). For additional information, refer to Section 418-01.
NOTE: If the instrument cluster (IC) is installed new, updated, or re-configured, the instrument cluster (IC) requires a parameter reset to allow the instrument cluster (IC) and the powertrain control module (PCM) to recognize the passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys. Failure to carry out the parameter reset to the instrument cluster (IC) may result in a no start condition.
Carry out the parameter reset and key programming procedure. For additional information, refer to Section 419-01 .
