It isn't a horrible job. You will need to unbolt the engine mounts and lift the engine and support it. The best way would be within engine crane if possible.
Does it need a new gasket or a new oil pan? Drain oil, then like said above, unbolt the engine, jack it up and support it. Then, unbolt the pan, unbolt the oil pump and you should be able to remove it. Ive never had to do it in the truck though.

I'm doing both the gasket and the oil pan. I think the gasket was leaking oil and wanted to replace the oil pan. I un bolted the oil pan already but I thought it would come right off. I like the idea of jacking up the engine, I'm just wondering where to place the jack. I don't have a crane. Is removing the oil pump a must also? I wish I knew all this before I detached the oil pan from the engine.
You could jack it up from the front under the pulley. Then block it up. The only time you dont have to remove the oil pump is when its out of the truck. The deep part of the pan is where the oil pump and pick up tube are residing. What is wrong with the original oil pan?
Thank you everyone for all your help. I think I was a little over my head when I took on this project, but glad I have the help from you guys. My goal is to restore to new every single thing I touch along the way. So If I was going to replace the gasket I thought I would replace the oil pan. I want to make things look and work like fresh from the factory as much as possible.
Here's another question and please excuse my ignorance, I'm new to a lot of this stuff. For the gasket I read people used RTV. What I found at the auto parts store was gasket Sealant and gasket maker. What product should I be using and do I use it on both sides of the gasket? Also does the oil pump require new gaskets? So I can go ahead and get those as well.
Thanks so much for all your help.
The oil pump has a paper type gasket. When I removed my oil pan, I did as stated above and jacked up the engine from underneath the crank pulley/harmonic balancer. I did unbolt the exhaust flanges at the manifolds, removed the air breather, and watched for clearance with the upper radiator hose and fan blade. I put 2x4 chunks between the engine block and motor mounts...lowered/removed jack. Unless the pan is dented up, I would just clean it up and prime/paint. One hard part not yet mentioned...you will have to install the oil pump/pick up and shaft with the oil pan already in place/resting on the crossmember. At this point, I had my gasket on the pan, lightly glued into position so all of the bolt holes lined up. I used Permatex super black for this.
This is a 2 day job if you have a garage and the proper tools. Take your time and be ready to get messy... I did this in an afternoon and almost ran out of daylight while working on it in front of my house on the street, which I'll never make that mistake again.
Thank you everyone for all your help, I ended up calling my mechanic for help but all these tips helped a ton. Luckily the truck was in the garage so it was able to sit there overnight. That pump installation was the hardest part with the oil pan on the way. But we were able to get everything bolted up and everything seems to be running great. Good thing I replaced the pan. The bottom of the pan was full of gunk. I think it could have been clogging up the pick up. Just happy to know I was able to get all that nasty stuff out of the engine.
On to the next project. Thank you everyone for the support. This forum is amazing.
