Thumbs up New 300 I6

I finally had the 240 taken out and had a 300 put in. What a difference! The 240 had served me well for 31 yrs. Put 169,000 miles on it. Was very strict on the oil change routine. Never once allowed the oil & filt. to go over 3,000 mi. The last 9,000 miles +/-..went through more oil than I liked. There are some serious inclines here abouts. Was not possible to hold the speed limit going up the inclines with the 240.
The 300 even can speed up on the same inclines! I also have the split cast iron exh. mnflds. to assist in the breathing. Did that on the 240. That made a big difference. (not enough to use another 240) everything from the 240 fit up on the 300.
My truck is a '65 F100 2WD. The 300 is out of a '86 (a Jasper engine). Am using a HD 4 spd. The rear end ratio is...3.70. I am using the 1V carb & oil bath air filter.
Very pleased.!

Great news. I'm a big believer in keeping it simple, upgrading within the same engine family is always the easiest route. The standard engine offered by manufactures is the minimum engine to get an average job done most economically. The original owner made the powertrain decision for his needs, not the future owners needs. That used vehicle may or may not work for new owners with different loads and or different terrains. Needless to say, the 300 is a great choice for adding more ponies.

Yes, 20 more ponies. I used the same 1V carb & oil bath air filter. The difference in power is much appreciated, comp'd to the 240.
Keeping it simple increases reliability...that is real ! important for me. The 240 was reliable...not one ounce of trouble.
All the best, Pete

Looking to replace the tired old 240 with a fresh rebuilt 300 next year in our 66. Got some questions for you-
Does the newer (86) block have the hole for a mechanical fuel pump? I’ve seen some 300s on engine builders websites that don’t have the hole.
Are there any differences with the newer engine say like provisions for emissions stuff or fuel injection that you had to work around?
Did you swap it yourself or have a shop do it? Did Jasper deliver it to your house?

thanks

Hi Anatta,
There are the threaded holes for bolting up a fuel pump. '86 is the last year for fuel pumps. No emissions stuff at all. No fuel injection. The fuel pump puts the gas up to my 1V carb.
I had a shop to do the swap. The motor was delivered there. I had to pay for the exchange (couldn't trade in the 240 block for a 300). That was $400.00 or $500.00 more, I think.
You will really like the 300. Much more power. Hope this helps, Pete

Anatta, Peter is right on the fuel pump, 86 was the last year for the motor driven fuel pump.
In 87 the 300 went to EFI so no need to machine the hole for the pump but have seen post the bolt holes are drilled & tapped for what ever good that is LOL.
On the EFI head other than think being fast burn and having 2 more bolt holes for the manifold it is just like a carb head.

You can install a EFI 300 six in your truck you would need to run an electric fuel pump and dont worry about the 2 extra bolts in the head for the manifolds.
You might even be able to used them but not sure on that. Other wise it is a drop in.

What they say for the 80 - 86 trucks is to use the EFI EXH manifolds with the factory log intake & carb (or after market intake & carb) for a little more power.
The EFI manifolds flow better just run the factory Y pipe. I also use a 94 full exh system factory intake / carb on my 81 F100.
The only thing I am not sure of is on your years truck if the EFI manifolds & Y pipe will clear everything.

If you do run the EFI manifolds depending on your choke you may need to come up with something to heat it and I got that worked out.
Also should heat the intake floor, hot water to a plate with with nipples works, got that worked out too.

Not to be a jack booted thug, and jack the thread. I just wanted to attest to jaspers warranty. My rodeo has a jaspers tranny, ay 2 mo left on the warranty i started to feel a vibe. My tranny guy found a thrust washer in backwards. jaspers not only shipped a new tranny they paid the round-trip labor for the R&R. That was over 10 yrs ago and the replacement is still in service.
RealWorld experience :-). Mike/EZ
