Well, some of you are aware of the motor conversion that I just did in my '65 F100 from a 300 I6 to a 289. The motor runs great...............BUT....................There is an annoying vibration throughout the truck. At first I thought that it was the damper. It was wobbling pretty bad so I replaced it. It cleaned up a lot of the vibration but there is still some shakin' goin' on! I was thinking that it might be the flywheel, but I thought you were supposed to use the flywheel that was, in my case, with the 289, not the 300. So I did. The only difference that I can think of is the 289 came out of a '65 Mustang with an auto tranny. My truck is a manual. Would this make a difference? If it does, could I use the flywheel from the 300 or will that not work?
Is there anything else that might be causing this vibration? The truck was fine when I had the 300 in it so I know it is not the suspension. The only other thing I can think of is something to do woth the drive line, but I do not know enough about them to know what that might be.
Ok. I made a mistake. I used the flywheel from the 300 in the 289. I think this is the problem. I am thinking I need to get a flywheel from a manual in order to be balanced properly. What do you think?
Responding as a novice. Hopefully, other experienced FTE members will offer their input.
You are correct, the 300 and the 289 flywheel are not interchangable.
Reference book indicates the 65 mustang with the 289, and manual trans. offered 2 flywheels. Apparently, there was a flywheel for what is referred to as "special engine". Assume an option, not sure. There is a different flywheel listed for the Automatic transmission. Does not appear the auto and manual flywheels are interchangable.
The flywheel for 65 mustang w/ manual trans are interchangable thru 68. Appears flywheel for the auto trans is interchangable thru at least 1971 , and with the 302.
Fortunately, I don't have to make sense of this post. Anyhow, make sure you follow up by checking your sources. Post if you find any errors. Perhaps other FTE members will have additional input.
Good luck,
Dave

Yes, you need the flywheel for a 289 with a standard tranny. If you have a driveshaft with a center bearing, make sure the u-joints are not out of phase. That will cause bad vibes also. Sometime people pull the half with the sliding yoke apart and don't get the u-joints lined up with each other.
Also, make sure you have right Pilot bushing/ bearing in crankshaft end. Otherwise tranny input shaft end is never true & centered, it wobbles. The wobble = vibration & eats Input shaft bearings in trans, also loosens splined hub in clutch friction disc which = more vibrations. . . .
U replaced the U-joints at the same time I did all of the other stuff. New clutch kit as well with pilot bushing and throw-out bearing. I am going to start with the flywheel and see what happens. At least the 4 speed, other than being HUGE AND HEAVY, is not that hard to take out.
