302 performance help
I'm doing some performance changes to my 79 302. Im gonna list what im planning on and if you guys can put in any input that would be great. Heres what im thinking
As of right now, the engine runs great with the stock compression of 8.4:1, but if i HAVE to change it i will. First of all, im taking out most of the emissions. Im going to put in an electric fan and take out the A.C. so i can take some of that stress out of the belts and free up some power. Now with the main parts, Im changing the 2-barrel carb to a 4-barrel Edelbrock, the intake to the RPM air gap, a 270H Comp cam, timing chain, lifters, etc., hooker competition headers, 2.5" dual exhaust with h-pipe (no cats) into hooker aero chamber mufflers. Im probably forgetting something as i usually do, but you guys will probably catch it.
Now the main help i needed was with the cam. The 270H says: "270H Magnum™ is a great cam for high performance driving in street machines. The 270H has a rough idle in small blocks and a noticeable idle in big blocks. This is the largest cam you can use with a stock torque converter. The 270H will not affect power accessories, but should be used with headers and a 4 BBL. carburetor. This is the perfect cam for cruising." In another part, it says "Best with mild convertor, 9:1 compression, and lower gears.", but its not required. It doesnt say anything about the heads, so will my heads work with this? Any help will help a lot! Thanks!!
Danny
