Hey everyone, new guy here. I'm not sure of the year of my truck other than it is a 64-66 F500. I can confirm that in a few days, but I'm looking for brake parts. The master cylinder was bone dry when I was looking at the truck before I bought it, and the brake pedal to the floor will kill the engine. Without much diagnosing I figure the booster has multiple leaks, the brake system will need completely gone through, and will be digging into all that here in the next few weeks. The only small problem is sourcing a brake booster! Anyone have any tips on what might interchange?
I also wondered about retrofitting a booster, and I see a lot of dual circuit master cylinder/brake booster kits sold. Is there a kit that I could get that mostly bolts up?
I do not plan to overload the truck and am not opposed to staying with the single cylinder brake system.
Anyone have axle/hub seals, bearing part numbers handy?
Lastly, I have not torn anything apart yet but was wondering if there is a source for relining drums? I searched for a few moments to see if drums were available at all but see they've been unobtainable for years. Or, is there a drum that will work from something else? The truck has 25k miles on it so I bet the drums are perfectly fine, but it would be good to know what my options are in case something pops up with them.
I believe you could get your booster rebuilt, if you cannot source a remanufactured one. Easy enough to mic your drums to see if within specs. Use the softest brake shoes you can get to make them last longer. Good luck
Good call on the soft material if the shoes need relined. Do you happen to know any booster rebuilders? I know Cardone/NAPA have the rebuild service, but if there is someone else I am open to suggestions.
My goal is to have the truck reliable enough to work by the beginning of the summer if at all possible.
I cannot vouch for them, but that’s why you need to introduce yourself in that big truck forum. Someone over there can tell you who’s trustworthy, who to avoid.
Yes, I have a post there after you pointed that side of the forum out. Google is a fantastic resource, but I'd rather not send something near irreplaceable off to the first guy that pops up in a search unless someone can vouch for them.
I'm also not opposed to rebuilding them myself, but having trouble finding a rebuild for it.
I have 64 F700 that needed booster, got from Oriley's . Wheel cyls were banjo, they were little more fun to find. It neededs master , kit fixes for while, pitted bad but leaks only when have big temp change. Looks to be a 64 from grill.
