Another question concerning upping the performance of this 351 & keeping some green in my wallet. The vehicle is listed below. Are there some good junkyard heads that with a little port match & polish would wake this engine up? That is along with some headers, true duals & possibly a chip upgrade. I have heard some about 302 GT-40 heads - but I am trying to find info for this 351. It will be driven at high elevation most of the time, so I feel flow is important. If this is a good swap, what can I find these heads on? Would early 70's 302 or 351 heads be better?
Another thought - are there any good stock heads available in Mexico that flow good & would bolt right on?This is where this van is going to spend quite a bit of time & their polution laws are quite a bit relaxed as compared to the USA. Heads are readily available at Ponce. Maybe something from a Ford Lobo? These trucks are known to be RUNNERS!!!
Sadly enough the gt-40 and gt-40p both 302 heads are nearly the best flowing heads ford produced, Equal to if not better than the 69 to early 70 351 head. The gt-40 also came out on the first gen lightning so they can't be all bad, well I guess they could. As far as flow numbers the gt-40 p is better by a fair margin, as you know they require special headers unless you wish to try and fit other non "p" headers which can be done but is a lot of trial and error. If your looking for either at the junkyard look on the passenger (head) side of the engine below (not under) the valve cover, right side near the first head bolt will be: "gt" for gt-40 and "gtp" for gt-40p, on the front of the head will be three noticable vertical lines for the gt-40 and four vertical lines for the gt-40p. These lines are noticable and located to the left of the freeze plug. gt-40p are only found on 302 explorer/mountaineer 97 1/2-2001 and the gt-40 are found on the 97 1/2 down explorer/mountaineer 302's. The gt-40 can also be found on the lightning motor 5.8 and some mustang gt cars 5.0 as well as some lincoln continentals. Don't forget if you use the 302 heads on the 351 you have to open the head bolts up to accept the 1/2" 351 bolts. Good luck hope this helps
Thank you for your reply! I see some additional info in another post, which will also help. Sometimes, I think I am blind!
I was wondering if you knew what years Lincoln Continital I might look for these heads on? I doubt I will be able to find a Mustang GT or Lightning, as most of the junk yards around here have older stuff. Thanks again for your reply!
I cannot be specific at this time. I just had a fellow mention he got his gt40's off a lincoln continental. Sorry. I will try and find something out. Explorers/mountaineers are common and both the gt40/gt40p can be found on their 5.0's. Good luck with your "people mover". Later
Should I come across specific years I will repost. Later
Thanks again JW! I am going to do a port & polish job on the stock heads & see what I get. I have to change valve cover gaskets anyway, so it wont be much more to pull the heads & work some magic on them. I come across stuff a lot, esp old Crown Vic police cars at this junkyard. They might have something worthy & cheap. At least I know what to watch for.
