First time I open her up on the HWY and this happens! I was afraid this would from a dead stop but not already moving. Any ideas on a good driveline replacement with some meat so I don’t end up along side the road again? Would like to upgrade all the drive lines, yokes and u-joints before this happens again! Haven’t even started to have fun with it yet.
Ouch!!!!! That does suck. I suspect your engine must be making ever so slightly more torque than the original stock engine... : )
I would visit your local driveline specialty shop. They can easily install stronger drive shaft yokes and maybe even go up a size on u-joints although then you might need to go with a conversion U-joint for the very rear.
Could have been, I didn’t notice it when I was cleaning and painting them but I wasn’t looking that close either. Still a good reason to update the whole driveline deal. I am afraid I will continue to have problems if I don’t. Dyno will tell but builder is guessing I will see 475-500hp and over 550 torque. Will be hitting the local Dyno shop now that the thing is running good. Took a while but the Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 is dialed in (3 map tries) and running really good now. Was a little disappointed at first but now that it is dialed in pretty sweet. Still have a couple motor issues to figure out but runs strong.
That does suck...for sure. Better a d/s than a yoke on the pinion....there has to be a weak link in there somewhere, and u joints are usually it. I would of taken the rest of the d/s out (slip yoke on other end at xfer case), locked in the hubs and drove home in 4 H and NOT put my foot in it. That u joint looks awful suspicious and I see no grease in there anywhere. But yea looks like the d/s ear failed when you punched the gas on that hot rod.
X2 on u joint upgrade time.
Yes outa state, but check out Blumenthal’s in Oklahoma City. You may ask some of the auto parts shops around you (Napa, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's) if they a recommendation on a local shop or have a number for a driveline specialist place. What Blumenthal’s is, somebody that rebuilds clutches and drive shafts and so on.
Even if you call those guys I think you’ll end up talking to Armando, extremely helpful guy in the yoke/u-joint department, you will get good info at least.

It does at that! I think it likely that the that yoke was already cracked on the driveshaft itself. The U-joint did not fail, the yoke did.
X2 the DS was cracked to start with.
The other thing to check out as it looks like you have a lift, that the U joints are not bottoming out on flexing
as that could also be how it cracked.

Just curious, did it let loose when you hammered on it and it down shifted or when the trans up shifted? I see an auto in past threads. Just locate a local drive line shop with a solid reputation and talk to them about upgraded flanges and new HD driveshafts. Remember you can drive the truck there in front wheel drive.
Well, I don’t know really. I put the hammer down and it lifts the front end up and puts me back in the seat. I am smiles ear to ear and then a horrible vibration. I hit the brakes and pull over. Get out everything looks good, put it back in drive and BANG.
