cam is eating distributor gears
Anybody out there ever had this happen to their distributor It fits into place perfectly doesn't seem to be binding when turned yet after driving it for 5 min it wears the teeth so bad it jumps out of time and starts backfiring through the carb has happened to two distributors now could it be a compatibility problem between cam and distributor gearing . Any remedies ?

You probably need to shim it up. This usually happens on an engine that has been rebuilt, and maybe decked or the heads shaved so the dist. is now seating lower. You are lucky you haven't ruined the cam. I am not sure of the exact procedure for determining how much to shim it. If some one here doesn't jump in with the info you may want to repost this thread in the engine specific forum.

I'm pretty new to the 67 352 world, but one of the first things I learned while replacing my cam was that the spacer in front of the thrust plate is an original motor part. When these engines are rebuilt with new timing gears, the spacer is built on to the new timing gear. when both the spacer and the new timing gear are installed together, the cam moves back and forth, the lifters slide partially off of the cam, and the distributor gears are destroyed, also the cam gears are chewed off. also the oil pump shaft moves and can possibly seize the pump. it all happens together. hope this helps

Glad i could help. i've recently completed the last tweaking on my old tank, I finally figured out the carb ajusting and provided nothing else breaks from old age, all I need to do now is drive it.
Now I can return to first bad habit.
