This thread brought back memories of a slide in camper my grandpa built back in the 60’s. Built from scratch pop-up slide in. I don’t think he had any plans to go by back then, but he built a crank/pulley/cable system to raise and lower the top. As it was described to me by my dad, it was built very much like you would see in a modern pop-up camper.

the pictures of him building it are dated 1962. The pictures of them on the road were dated 1963. No photos of the inside have surfaced, unfortunately.

Back in 2019 we took a trip to Albuquerque, NM and stayed at the Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post. They have some vintage trailers dating from the 50's-70's on display. Below is a link to an album with some pictures of them.

Not sure how much of this is original. I can't find the source of the image. The Rolls Royce grille looks like an addon.

It's not a Ford, but it's a nice looking rig.

When I was in grade school, my parents bought a 1972 Rolite. It was basically a pop up trailer that was hard sided. We lived in Iowa then and we took a trip down to Mexico. We were staying in New Mexico and was heading to the border. We got up on a Sunday morning to catch Sunday mass before heading out and when my dad tried to fold it up, one of the gears slipped a couple cogs on the gear and we had a mess. I just remember my dad tearing apart the side of the camper to get to those gears. He was full of grease and my brother and I were dead quiet but laughing inside cause we got to skip Sunday mass! We ended up renting a motel room (with a kitchenette!) in Denver for a few days while the RV dealer fixed it. The ones below are not the exact one we had, but fairly close to it.

Wow, neat idea! I could see how inaccessible moving parts would be an issue.
