Is e4od to 4r100 possible?

Hi, I have a 1995 f250 with the 300 inline 6. And my e4od is starting to fail. I am going to have some trouble finding a match at a salvage yard so what I am wondering is if I can use a 4r100 instead. I think it will be a lot easier to find, and I am willing to do the work, I just need to know if it works and what steps I will need to do. Thanks!

Yes, it can be done.

You need to change the solenoid body to an on/off TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) control, all late '99 and newer 4R100s had a PWM (pulse Width Modulated) TCC control. You also need to remove the pump and change an orifice from 0.250" to 0.030". If you don't, the torque converter locks will SLAM on.

The 4R100 also has a TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor) and an OSS (Output Speed Sensor.) The E4OD does not have these and your PCM has no input for them. Just leave the sensors in place to plug the holes. No wiring needs to go to them.

The above will NOT work for a 300 six. That has a small block bellhousing pattern, and none of the 4R100s have that. I was thinking diesel where the bellhousing was the same for E4OD and 4R100. Sorry for the confusion.

That does not sound too bad. Certainly not as bad as I was expecting. No need to change driveshaft or mounts? I am completely new to this so if there is something obvious that your not mentioning because it is assumed, I don’t know it.

What’s the best way to find resources on how to do those tasks?

No, there is nothing else.

The 4R100 is really an updated and renamed E4OD.

My question is why would you go through all that trouble to install an unknown transmission from a junkyard? Yes, I know, you can get a warranty on a junkyard transmission but that means doing the job twice instead of buying a reman with a better warranty and being done with it.

Because I am struggling financially and the 2 local salvage yards to me sell them for 100 ish dollars each with only a 30 dollar core deposit. I also have a lot of free time and like the mechanical challenge and the experience and learning. What do you think of that reasoning?

What about a 4r70w? Can I swap in that alternatively? Would it require the exact same steps?

Not without a computer and wiring changes.

Okay. Just to get it straight. I have an E40D that is broken, so I need a new transmission. I was struggling to find one but I can, with relative ease, put in a 4r100. If I want to make sure I get the right transmission, I should check the Transmission code on the door jam sticker for an E? And I will find it in 10th gen f trucks? Last but not least, is there an estimated cost for the things I will need to get the 4r100 to work in place of my e4od? Adapters or such?

Are there any 4R100's with the small block bolt pattern?

I honestly have no idea. Is that another issue I would run into?

That is dirt cheap for a transmission. The u-pull yards list a transmission for $400 and car-part.com either says “call for price” or $600 and up.

I have put used engines and transmissions in vehicles before but don’t have anywhere to do the installation myself. It gets expensive paying someone to do the job more than once. If you are doing all the labor then have at it.

So it sounds like the consensus is the 4r100 will not mount to my 300 inline 6? I really am stuck with trying to find a salvage e4od that is connected to a small block engine?

Perhaps I can widen the range of vehicles I know I can get a matching e4od from? All I know is that I need to find one that is in a 9th gen for with a 300 6. Can I also get a e4od from an e series? What about a bronco? Expedition? And lastly, is it possible to find a compatible e4od from a 1997 F-150? I know I can’t use a trans from a vehicle with a big block, diesel or 4x4, but what list of engines count as big block vs small block?
