Gas tank oopsie question

truck is a 2000 f350 7.3L CC shortbed 4WD automatic with the little 26(?) gallon tank.

I just snagged a 38 gallon tank that only after agreeing to buy it did I see it was from a gasser, NOT a diesel.

will the straps from the 26 gallon tank fit the 38 gallon tank and does anyone recall if the holes are pre drilled from factory for both tank sizes?

IF this is simply a mild work-around by cleaning the tanks insides, cut/trimming the plastic circular “wall” that the “fuel gauge assembly slides into out of the way for the diesel stup to drop down into the tank…. BTW I plan to help my friends with the Hutch & Harpoon mods when we drop the little and install the big one … even OF we have to return this one and grab a “proper diesel 38 gallon OEM tank….

as we are coming out of a week of ice storm fun down here in DFW, TX the yard is a muddy mess today… so it’s likely gonna be a couple days before we tackle this project.

thoughts?
suggestions?

I could be wrong but if there was room for the bigger tank I think that's what would have been installed new.

I'm pretty sure the 38 gallon is for the long bed

dude, it’s a 100% black plastic tank, the cup-like wall is formed by what looks like injection molding. Thus the stuff will cut as easily as the fill tubes when doing the hutch & harpoon mods.

dude, the forum is 100% searchable. The accessible search box allows you to find queries that align with your project. Thus, you could find answers to your questions, without unwanted safety advice, as easy as pie.

Case in point...
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...tank-swap.html

@douglpr42 poses valid concern and sound advice IMO as Ford had compsite tanks as well as metal vessel counterparts. Your initial post did not distinguish which material you had with the tank in question.

If you're willing to accept advice in your tank swap endeavor, the FTE brotherhood will be eager to offer it, but it be wise to not bite the hand that feeds.

/lowers head in embarrassment

it’s been 3 years since I asked that question & never saw this reply until today. (Sigh) 2023 was not my best year. I’m sorry. That was not my normal presence in online forums. It definitely seems the med’s the VA was transitioning me away from at that time really ruined my track record here. The stuff I have been using to help with “depression stuff” for the last 2+ years has really helped. I finally have “my imagination & troubleshooting skills” back in nearly 100% effect.

Having been a longtime user & participant in this and several other forums like “USMB” (ultimate Subaru message board) it’s surprising to see how stupefied I was back then; in 2023 & several years before. Near zero troubleshooting capabilities & totally unaware of using the search function back then too.

/end tangential honesty & apologies

returning to topic of thread…..

That tank was absolutely filthy inside. I recall trying at length a few times and got stymied. There was leaves, what looked like a couple partially resolved Wallyworld grocery bags and some wads of clear packing tape glued to the floor of the tank towards the front (not instantly visible on my first inspection)… that goop was like taffy on the floor of this tank.

its been sitting in the backyard still and now I’m very curious to see the condition of its floor. Maybe it can be finally removed? (Shrugs) if not then I’ll just cut it up & recycle it. Call it a semi-expensive learning experience & humbly move forward.
