I was wondering what people would think of this idea I had for a major off-road truck...
Start with an F-150 body on a tube chassis, but with a flatbed. Have Rockwell 2 and 1/2 ton axles with a tandem rear, making 6 wheel drive. A turbocharged semi-truck I-6 diesel engine(600+ horsepower) 6 speed manual trans(granny 1st and O.D. 6th), Klune-V underdrive, Atlas 2 transfer case, running 44 inch boggers on beadlocks, and smokestacks to top it off.
if ya don't wanna build Look on the truck trader site and search 90 and up model trucks in the texas area. There is to one is a reg cab setup like big foot and the other is a crew cab. One has a hopped up 460 and the other a hopped up 7.3 with a ZF5 or 6 speed. With all there mods not bad priced.
Just buy a 6x6 2.5 ton truck (about $3500) with a 478 c.i., put your body on it, and call it good. I doubt you could ever put a tube chassis truck on the road legally.
Who says I wanna put it on the road? I can actually get most of the parts used, because I live near a semi-truck junckyard. It's got tons of these old vehicles, and parts would be easy to get.
look up government auctions for retired deuce and a halves or a 5 ton. you can pick them up VERY cheap in VERY good condition (as in under $200 if you play your cards right). sounds just like what you're planning.
well redneck i like the idea i was looking around the allmighty ebay the other day and they had a buch of military 6x6's and tandem axles for sale from 2 1/2 ton up to 10 ton
A guy down the road from me already has somthing similar to what you are talking about, For Sale Its a 79 f250 with a 428 d 60 front with a tube frame from the cab back with dual axles sitting on 40's with a flat bed. It's cool but needs finished.
