The article specifically mentions hexavalent chrome. Trivalent chrome is an acceptable substitute in most cases (decorative) and is far less toxic. There are processes being developed for hard chrome applications using trivalent chemistry.

I'll second Abe's reminder on the importance of elections. Theoretically we still live in a republic and still choose the representatives that make our laws. Unfortunately, in actual practice, big corporate media, tech, and education have joined forces and are increasingly able to control what we hear (and don't hear) and from what perspective--and this allows them to unduly influence how people cast their votes. Without a free and fair media, and an educational system that instills patriotism and an unbiased presentation of American history, it's an uphill fight for democracy to work (or even to survive).
