newbie question

i am thinking about buying a 1994 di 7.3 turbo diesel 4+4 auto

how are these compared to the powerstroke?

i am getting it for haulin, plowing, and general running around

how is the power on these?

the truck just had the motor rebuilt but has a trans upshift problem

he wants 4500.00 for it
what do you think?

thanks

That tranny problem is the only scary part. It has no where near the power of a Stroke. If it's had all the Ford parts removed and been upgraded with ATS stuff, it will be a little closer.

I would check and see what it will cost to have the tranny redone. Thase trannys are known for going out. After a profeesional rebuild you should be good for another 100,000 miles depending on how hard it is worked. As for power I have a 94 turbo IDI and it has plenty of power. If not you can add exhaust adjust fuel and boost and have more then enough. My brother has a 95 dodge cummins diesel and it is an even match when we are running empty or towing or hauling. The 94 PS was not covered up with power. From what I have read the 94 IDI turbo has 190 HP and 425 FT LB of torque. I can tell you I love mine.

It depends on when in 94 made. Early 94 is 7.3 idi. Late 94 or 94.5 is powerstroke diesel. If your engine is black is is the powerstroke. If it is grey it is the early idi. Mine is the idi and I love it. NO computer and parts are cheaper. Powerstroke is computer controlled. The computer makes it easy to just throw a chip in it for performance but other the that I like mechanical. Also if it is the idi you will notice it is a lot quiter trhen a powerstroke.

$4500 plus $2000 for a tranny re-build=$6500 is still a sweet deal for this truck(in my opinion) I have a 92 idi non turbo and when it comes to pushing snow its like a tractor(with about 2000lbs in the bed)I dont think you will be to dissapointed.I dont think i would sell my 92 for any less than at least $7000.

Do not sound down about it they are great. They parts are cheaper like injectors pumps that kind of thing. Oh you can still hear them run just fine but I can go through a drive through and order without turning my truck off. The power is good and you can do some things to make it better. Also the earlier power strokes had a lot of trouble. The injectors go out kind of regular on them and they are high dollar. You can also up the furl and boost on your idi yourself *** better exhaust and have more then enough power.

that makes me feel so much better!

i bought the truck for plowing and the usual home-depot crap

i bought it on ebay and the truck looks sweet, and the motor was just rebuilt, less than 2k miles on it.

the trans starts off in second but if you put it in 2nd it will shift normal, so hopefully it wont be much to fix.
