1984 F-250 6.9L Diesel. New Batteries, alternator and voltage regualtor yet those same "New Batteries" are dead. Why? What else should I be looking for?
What exactly is happening? Does the engine crank over normally? Are you getting out of the exhaust pipe? Did you have trouble before you performed the electrical upgrades?
This all started after I had my starter changed. One day I woke up and the batteries were dead so I changed them($124/each). About a week and a half later they were dead again. I brought it to the garage and they changed the regulator, alternator and apparantly charged my batteries. She started just fine when I picke her up, but the next morning went flat again after about 45 seconds of cranking.
It sounds to me like you may have some bad battery cables. Battery cables are generally rated for 1200-1500 amps and as the vehicle ages the conductivity will degrade. I have experienced similar problems with some oilfield equipment. We found that the manufacturer built the equipment using welding cable wire. After about a year of service we found all of the rigs had terrible trouble starting. We went through about 30 batteries between our 12 unit fleet before I determined the problem. Welding cable is only rated for about 350 amps. Check your cables and battery posts. A bad ground will also result in the troubles you have described. My own '86 F-250 w/ the 6.9 was dead all last week and I could not even get it to roll over with the booster. I finally saw smoke from the positive posts so I cleaned all four posts and it started without any boost assistance. Good Luck.
Good advise Alberta Dave. Also you can check for a short (battery drain)remove BOTH neg batt cables. Then touch 1 off the batt terminal,if you see a spark then you have something drawing the batts down.Make sure you have EVERYTHING turned off when you do this even a little thing such as a door keft open will cause a spark (dome light).
