Question engine painting question

The machine shop said to not paint the engine as the spray paint might cause problems with the gaskets. Please note that the guy who said this probably has never painted an assembled engine (warranty issues, probably).

My question: is it safe to just spray engine paint over the gaskets (when I'm painting the rest of the block)?

I absolutely cannot imagine that painting an engine whole will hurt anything like the gaskets. Now, depending on your overspray and preparation process, there are otherthings that might get screwed up.

I tried to remove everyhting I could (like alternator, carb, fuel pump etc.) plug up openings super tight (I made custom plates out of maple wood to bolt over fuel pump and intake manifold etc.). Then we sand blasted it -- that's right. Looks pretty cool I may add. Of course, if it craps out in 5k miles, I'll blame the sanding. But I am pretty sure I got it right.

Perhaps he was worried about solvents in the paint eating at the gaskets. I don't know. In any case, I thought I'd just smear a little grease over them (and the freeze plugs) before I sprayed it JUST TO BE SURE.

I used Ford Blue paint on my engine and have had zero problems. I would be more willing to go along with the warranty thing specific to his shop. Be sure you have all the surfaces preped and everything that doesn't need paint covered up and paint away.
