I don’t even have a passport. There is no reason for me to ever leave this country.
Right, but it is my understanding that domestic flights that would require a real ID will accept a passport in lieu of that. If you never intend on flying in country then niether may be necessary.
As of now it looks like that requirement won't be enforced until 2025.

Right. I haven’t been on a plane since 1998-ish. The good days.
Not all licenses have to be Real IDs. Mine is not, and I won’t get one either.
If that yellow star is the real ID, then Texas has mandated that everyone get it.
They made everyone get their license or Texas ID card updated with it even if your license/ID wasn't expiring yet.
That was a couple of years ago, but mine already had it from my previous renewal.
The Real ID is a federal program. This is why all these states have 8 year renewals and people aren't used to it. ALL licenses have to be Real IDs. Alaska has been putting it off since 2018 but I think you had until May 2023 to get a Real ID or you can't fly.
The enhanced ID is a state by state deal. Michigan has offered the Enhanced ID for years that allows you to walk or drive into Canada or Mexico but no other countries will recognize it like a passport.

Correct, Real ID is not a requirement and all ID's are NOT real ID's. My license is NOT a Real ID nor is it enhanced ID. NYS you have three options. I chose the least of the three and still have an 8 year renewal.

As stated somewhere else in this thread I think the day is coming where it will have to have one of those ID certifications to get on an airplane. Even for domestic flights. Unless of course you have a passport. I don't.
If you never have to fly then it doesn't matter. I haven't been on a plane in probably 10 years or more. But just in case a situation arose where I needed to fly I'm all set.
Also I'm only about 12 miles or so from the Canada border. The license is good for the occasional day trip over there on the motorcycle.
I think NY went to the 8 year several years ago as a temporary money grab gimmick under Cuomo.

New York isn't going to allow you to opt out eventually neither will any other state.
Getting a passport is super easy and really fast if you need to fly. I didnt opt for the Real ID upon renewal because I already had a passport. Have no problem flying domestically with just the passport alone, or driving into Canada. Just got the kids their passports last year and it was 3 days in the mail.

Passport processing has been backed up for months and estimated time is closer to 3 months right now.
