All I had to do was pull the cluter out.
swap the printed board and put the tach in.
Install new bulbs being you are there.
And put cluster back inback.
I hear some had to plug a wire in under the hood but that is all I have herd.

My 86 is a XLT Lariat and it has gauges for oil, temp. and etc. so I don’t know if it will work with the idiot lights or not. If it has the gauges all you have to do is remove your cluster from the dash, remove your printed circuit, and unfasten the blank plate where the tach goes and fasten in the tach. Put your new printed circuit on and reinstall it in the dash. That’s all I had to do when I installed mine. Now mine also has the original MFI 5.0 and wiring harness too.
On the switch itself behind the dash there should be a little button with a spring on it. Push that button in while pulling the **** out. The shaft comes completely out of the switch. If you can lay down and look up at the switch you can barely see the button. I would think that there is several YouTube videos on how to remove it.
Alright, I got the headlight and windshield **** gone.. but there is a third one, to the right of the windshield **** that is smaller and off-white. The hook tool I have can't get in there, will have to get another one I guess. Is that a custom thing?
I see you did not pull the head light shaft with the **** so dont know if you broke it or not as the **** dose not come off the shaft.
I dont know what that white **** is as it is not factory.
You are going to have to look up behind the dash to see what it is and how it is fasten.

I think we've got a bit of a mystery going on here. I know the **** comes off the shaft of the headlight switch. I've done so on my '84.
I just checked in the factory service manual. For E series vans, it has instructions to depress that button and remove the **** and shaft together. For F series truck, it says to use a hook tool to release the **** from the shaft.
Seems pretty cut and dry, right? Then I checked RockAuto. It shows the type of switch with the push button release. I give up!
FWIW, my Corvair has the style with the push button release. Unfortunately, it is nearly inaccessible. The factory service manual has detailed instructions to remove a small trim panel on the end of the dash and reach way in at an angle with a long dowel to press the button. Gotta wonder who thought up that one...
