Hey crew, I’m wanting some verification on my thoughts. So my 4x4 isn’t working right now. The auto hasn’t worked because of a vacuum leak so I’ve always manually locked the hubs and then it works fine. Now when I lock the hubs and turn 4x4 switch the light comes on but front tires don’t move. I pulled both hubs and they seem to work fine. Climbed underneath and it seems the front driveline spins free in 2wd and when I put In 4wd it seems to lock up like it should. I’m thinking the Transfer case is maybe shot? A couple of times trying to use the 4x4 I heard a clinging/grinding from possibly the transfer case. I just want to verify my thoughts before I get another TC or rebuild this one. I have a 1500 mile round trip this Thursday-Sunday so I would like to get it done quick. Thank y’all for all the help.
One way to test it is get all four tires off the ground on jackstands, turn hubs, put in 4 Hi, leave trans in Neutral, turn ign off, turn by hand the front tires and watch front driveline/rear tires.
Okay I’ll try that tomorrow. I was driving today and switched it to 4wd while using my scanner and I received a P1876 code. Transfer Case 2wd solenoid failure. I’m going to see what I can find out about this code.
A harder way (than test ohms) to rule out the motor and solenoid, if you remove the electric motor from the transfer case you can reach in with pliers and manually shift the transfer case into 4x4. 10mm bolts hold the motor on if I remember correctly. Did this ontop of a mountain in wyoming once. This test would rule out a mechanical failure of the transfer case or axle shafts, ring and pinion etc. The ohm test would be easier, and seams to be the problem.
I actually did that Tuesday… pulled the motor and was able to shift it with a wrench.. also while off I operated the switch and the motor rotated back and forth… I reinstalled and tried to drive it in 4x4 and it seemed to work but heard and felt a vibrating sound. Switched back to 2wd and noise went away. Now I’m thinking inside transfer case might be an issue? I drove 11 hr drive to Dallas yesterday and didn’t have any issues. When I get back to Colorado I will look into it again.
