I was looking things over under my 1986 F150, when I stumbled across this housing with 4 lines going in and one going out. Looks like it's a secondary fuel filter, that takes some sort of cartridge filter. Am I correct? Attaching photo of the part in question. I'm assuming the bottom unscrews to replace the filter in it?
Truck have EFI and dual tanks?
You did not say what motor you have but are you sure you dont have 6 lines total to it?
2 from the motor side: supply and a return to the motor.
The other 4: 2 should be supplies 1 from each tank and the other 2, 1 each returns to the tanks.
You are right about the filter and the bottom should unscrew to replace it.
It is also a srurge tank with the EFI system.

I have the 5.0. Yes I think it has 6 lines total. Has the normal canister inline filter on the outlet side of the frame mounted high pressure pump.
Dual tanks with EFI
I had an '88 F150 (injected 351W) for a while, that I assumed would have a filter there in need of changing...but discovered there wasn't & wasn't meant to be.

I have a 86 F150 XLT Lariat with the MFI 5.0 and duel tanks too. That is the switch for which tank you are using and it should have 4 lines on the back side and 2 on the engine side. Mine does have a filter in it. Here’s a link to what it looks like:
Got that filter off this past weekend, here is what it looked like with crap from the old front tank:
A replacement front tank and in tank pump/sending unit installed, and lines blown out ( they had no dirt in them) Also replaced high pressure pump and filter, lines were clean, and the gas emptied from those was clear.
While attempting to start my 1986 F150, I notice gas dripping underneath. I looked and it was dripping from that fuel reservoir thing. The O ring that was in the filter box was not the same diameter as the old one, which I had to reuse. Am guessing the old one had a crack or something, that's making it leak past it. What's the diameter of the o ring that seals it, so I can source one from my local parts house, or is there something else I can use to seal it
I would try the one that came in the filter box. Also make sure you get it very tight on there. It was very difficult to get unscrewed correct? Put a little oil or grease on the new o-ring, so when the cap spins on it will not roll up the new o-ring.

Same as my dads '89 E150 van with 5.0 EFI engine. I checked it thinking that was why the engine wouldnt run anymore and there was minimal fuel pressure. Took the bottom reservior off and there was no filter. I looked online and there was no listing for a fuel filter for this application. Ended up being the lift pump in the tank that took a crap and I had to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump.
