So, I am exploring the possibility of buying a replacement box for my 1964 F100 long box. Mine would need major repair to overcome the rust issues. I have run across a potential donor, but it has the tool box mounted on the driver's side of the box. My original box has the tool box mounted on the passenger side. I have not seen any in the past, that are mounted on the driver's side. Did they mount these on both sides, or is this potentially an add-on by a previous owner?
Mostly a dealer add-on. There was one box, not left or right specific, but nearly always on the passenger side. So, you ought to be able to make it work. Good luck
From the Ford factory they were mounted on the passenger's side. But they could be installed on the driver's side as well by the dealer or by an owner after the fact. Looks like the correct box for a long bed. There were some brackets and hardware that went along with them, too, to hang them from the underside of the bed. The brackets should work for either side as far as I know.
Here's a couple of sets of the hardware that they sold separate from the toolbox to give you an idea if you hadn't seen it all before. I'd guess you have all this on your current setup and the donor probably does as well.
The box does not fit driver's side without modification. I have boxes on both sides and the notch to clear the spring shackles makes them non reversible. You could however patch and reverse the notch accordingly which is what was done to mine. Or, perhaps remove the pinch welds that attach door frame and flip box.

I'll second this. To mount on the drivers side you would need to modify the box.
